What We Want

The Assistant Athletic Director is responsible for Football student-athlete health and well-being concerns. Works collaboratively with other departments and professionals to ensure the proper care of all football student-athletes. Is responsible for hiring and evaluation of qualified, professional training staff who work directly with student-athletes.

Position Details: This position may be required to work nights, weekends, and holidays. Employee will supervise (3 FT and 1 PT) Athletic Trainers.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience

  • 4 years of athletic training/sports medicine experience

Required Licenses and Certifications:

  • Certified Athletic Trainer AND Licensed Athletic Trainer or Physical Therapy AND Sports Certified Specialist (SCS)

  • Eligible for Texas Board of Physical Therapy Examiners licensure

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • General knowledge of NCAA rules

  • Knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, and database programs

  • Oral and written communication skills

  • Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Masters or Doctorate degree in Physical Therapy

  • Strong preference given to candidates with 6 or more years of experience in athletic training/sports medicine experience

Essential Duties/Tasks:

  • Rehabilitation Services - Works collaboratively with staff athletic trainers and team physicians on rehabilitation of student athletes. Coordinates rehabilitation needs and coveys that information between the two parties and the outside rehab facility. Promotes accessibility through intentional interaction with sport coaches, support staff, and Bright personnel via formal or informal site visits, meetings, etc. Develops rehabilitation protocols and maintains records.

  • Administrative and staff management - Assists the Director of Athletic Training with departmental administrative responsibilities. Assists in the annual performance evaluation process and the hiring process during periods of staff transition. Assists with budget management and planning, as well as policy and procedure revision and facilitation. Provides recommendations to best practice guidelines and implementation as it applies to Texas A&M University. Communicates with medical providers as needed. Attends educational meetings with student athletes (ie, concussion education, athletic training policy, etc.). Administers and organizes day-to-day operations of Main Campus athletic training room. Oversees opening/closing duties and daily, weekly, monthly, and annual maintenance/upkeep of facility. Documents daily treatment and rehabilitation of student athletes, and documents athlete schedule compliance.

  • Supervision - Directly supervises Athletic Trainers (3 Full-Time & 1 part-time). Oversees staff as needed during time commitment conflicts, illness, and/or periods of staff transition. Oversees staff Athletic Trainers with planning/hosting of competitions, tournaments, post season play as needed.

  • Education - Coordinates staff educational and certification opportunities to ensure receipt of proper licensure and accreditation while creating an environment of professional growth, innovation, and teamwork in overseeing a highly reputable and effective program. Works alongside academic professionals in the College of Health & Kinesiology, Masters of Athletic Training, and other departments in providing educational and practical opportunities for student trainers. Serves as Adjunct Professor for Athletic Training Education program (1 credit hour rehabilitation course). Provides clinical interaction with master’s students of Athletic Training.

  • Substance Abuse Program - Assists the department’s substance abuse testing and education program, while maintaining accurate and timely records. Works alongside coaches, administrators, and student-athletes to create an informative and supportive substance abuse program. Serves as Drug testing coordinator for Athletics Department. Works with sports psychology to determine test dates, relays information from Aegis regarding roster selections, gathers supplies and coordinates test location, and relays information regarding test results.

  • Compliance - Maintains continual and thorough familiarity with all applicable NCAA, Southeastern Conference and Texas A&M University rules and regulations. This position works to establish and ensure communication and enforcement of rules and regulations for all staff members and student workers supervised. Compliance is a shared responsibility.
