ASSISTANT ATHLETIC DIRECTOR OF BROADCAST OPERATIONS (HUSKY VISION HQ)

Position Summary –
Reporting to the Deputy Athletic Director, Administration, the Assistant Athletic Director of Broadcast Operations for Husky Vision Headquarters will lead the efforts to deliver a first-class linear and digital television broadcast experience and will be a self-motivated, team-oriented, organized, problem solver who will coordinate and lead all live event video broadcasts of home athletics events and assist with in-game production elements.  Position will collaborate with an extensive group of internal and external stakeholders including facility and operations, information technology, marketing, athletic communications, the Big Ten Network, the department’s multimedia rights holder, campus organizations, conference, vendors, and other stakeholders to ensure the best event viewing experience possible. The position will be responsible for the design, development, execution, and implementation of events as well as the staffing and training of the broadcast production room and in venue videoboards. Staffing will include a mix of full-time, part-time, and student staff that will work directly with the Big Ten Network Student U program, the conference office, and the University of Washington.

Position Responsibilities –

Administration
• Determine the overall framework for the Broadcast Operations and Engineering units in support of departmental goals and requirements.
• Lead the department’s strategic broadcast vision with regards to future technology for all venues, sports, trainings, and competition. Determine project needs, justification, and challenges.
• Collaborate with a diverse team of campus staff, consultants, and external partners on the design, integration, and execution of the department's Production Control Room and the Big Ten StudentU program.
• Develop, implement, document, and troubleshoot pro-active processes, workflows, and offer guidance and support to the engineering team with preventative maintenance for computers, production equipment, distribution systems and engage with vendors and technical staff for repairs.
• Create and maintain a video broadcast roadmap to strategically plan maintenance, upgrades, repairs, and replacement of equipment.
• Inform the Broadcast Operations and Engineering budget; identify resources required to acquire technologies to sustain current business operations; prepare the budget plan; create long-range plans so the department can align resources with upgrade / investment timelines.
• Manage relationships with third-party service providers by enforcing the agreed upon scope of services within the various signed service agreements (part-time staff, maintenance providers, external partners, etc.). Evaluate new products; negotiate with vendors to provide the best support for the department. Management of the development, negotiation and finalization of all broadcast related support contracts and Service Level Agreements (SLAs) for supported entities.
• Oversee scheduling and staffing for broadcasting and videoboard production at events.
• Serve as the point person for technical operations on capital projects within athletic facilities regarding videoboards, control rooms and other related items.
• Management of the department wide videoboard DAK systems; support the creation and maintenance of a refresh pan for all systems and related control room equipment.

Production
• Oversee the production of live event broadcasts over various platforms, including linear, digital and in venue displays.
• Position will collaborate with an extensive group of internal and external stakeholders including facility and operations, IT, marketing, athletic communications, the Big Ten Network, the department’s multimedia rights holder, campus organizations, conference, vendors, and other stakeholders to ensure the best event viewing experience possible.
• Responsible for the design, development, execution, and implementation of events as well as the staffing and training of the broadcast production room and in venue videoboards.
• Build and lead a team of full-time and part time broadcast professionals, engineers and game-day operators/freelancers to operate and work all events; conduct ongoing reviews of budgeting and staffing plans, recruiting, training, supervising, and evaluating departmental personnel and service providers.
• Knowledge of digital video and web streaming including online platforms. Integrate webcast, streaming, and IP technologies in the delivery of web-based media.
• Lead strategic initiatives with an extensive group of internal and external stakeholders including but not limited to facility and operations, IT, marketing, athletic communications, the Big Ten Network, the department’s multimedia rights holder, campus organizations, conference, vendors, and other stakeholders to ensure the best event viewing experience possible.
• Responsible for the design, development, execution, and implementation of events as well as the staffing and training of the broadcast production room and in venue videoboards.
• Work with Big Ten Network Staff in terms of requirements, event schedules, and production needs to meet desired outcomes.
• Build a community and collaborate with peers in the industry.

Development
• Build a collaborative production community and collaborate with peers in the industry to stay abreast on all new technology supporting live event production.
• Develop policies, procedures, and protocols reflecting industry best practices that best positions UW for success regarding live broadcasts and videoboard production.

Compliance with the rules and regulations of the University, the NCAA, the Conference, the State of Washington and any other governing body is of paramount importance to the University.  The overall responsibility of this position is for the successful operation of the program in full compliance with all such rules and regulations.

Minimum Requirements:
• Bachelor’s Degree in Broadcast Journalism or related field.
• A minimum of 5 years of experience in an Operational or Broadcast Engineering role in the collegiate or professional sports industry.

Additionally:
• End to end experience designing, building, installing, operating, and maintaining a control room/broadcast facility.
• Demonstrated ability to document work with technical drawings, spreadsheets, and schematics.
• Demonstrated knowledge of video fiber infrastructure and connectivity between venues.
• Knowledge of fiber optic and radio frequency video signal transmission systems.
• Knowledge of video and audio signals for quality control for in-venue operations.
• Ability to be resourceful, research equipment documentation and solutions to problems, and be proactive in systems issues prevention and resolution.
• Experience with running multiple shows concurrently.
• Knowledge of Daktronics scoreboard video systems.
• Familiarity with the following broadcast standards: SMPTE 2110, AES67, MXF, MPEG2, MPEG 4, RS-422, RS-232, Fiber.
• Professional operating experience with video switchers, audio consoles, replay and graphics machines.
• Specific in-depth experience with broadcast technical or engineering work.
• Specific experience with Video Switchers, Replay Systems, Broadcast routing, Graphic and Video playout systems.
• Due to the large emphasis on event-support, this position includes many nights and weekends above and beyond daily responsibilities. Ability to work a flexible schedule, be on-call, support productions remotely as needed, and work sporting events and events that may occur on holidays and weekends.

Preferred Qualifications:
• Experience in both control-room and in-field engineering situations and have a demonstrated passion for teaching and leading student work forces.
• Seven years of experience in an Operational or Broadcast Engineering role in the collegiate or professional sports industry.
• The ideal candidate will also have a proficiency in IT & IP based workflows, common A/V setup & servicing and Daktronics infrastructure.
• While not required, candidates with specific broadcasting or engineering certifications will strongly be considered.
• Working knowledge of university, conference, and NCAA rules.
