Position Summary
The Applications Specialist supports the university’s cloud-based research administration application.
The position requires working expertly with functional users, responding to support requests, making system configuration changes while developing and following change management best practices, creating and maintaining training resources, and assisting with the evaluation of product enhancements to support the business processes of the Office of Sponsored Programs and Research Compliance in a multi-campus, multi-tiered environment.
The Applications Specialist develops strong relationships with stakeholders including users and IT staff and ensures that faculty and staff can effectively use the research administration application.
Specific responsibilities include:
  • Provide support for end users.
  • Work with IT, functional leads, and the vendor as needed to resolve support issues and assist with communications when necessary.
  • Add and remove user access as necessary.
  • Troubleshoot common and non-routine problems. Close related tickets in a timely manner.
  • Create and maintain user documentation and training resources.
  • Deliver training to faculty and staff users of the system.
  • Test the system after custom and/or vendor-supplied upgrades are implemented or deployed.
  • Ensure that all features and integrations function appropriately.
Conditions of Employment
  • This position is subject to additional hours that extend beyond the typical work hours, including weekend or holiday work.
  • May require occasional overnight travel as needed.
  • Information Security: This position requires administrative access to the university’s information systems and/or sensitive university data. The incumbent is expected to be aware of and adhere to the information security policies of the university as well as all applicable federal, state, and local laws, follow information security best practices applicable to their job area, and to pursue information security training and awareness opportunities when possible.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Working knowledge (typically 1 -3 years of experience,) with enterprise application administration and implementation projects, or related academic technology support.
  • Working knowledge (typically 1 -3 years of experience,) working with vendor-supplied software applications.
  • Knowledge and use of enterprise information systems.
  • Understanding of web applications.
  • Strong technical and problem-solving skills with the ability to assist users in using cloud-based web applications effectively.
  • High familiarity with Software Development Life Cycles (SDLC).
  • Strong presentation skills with the ability to explain relevant technologies to non-technical users.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to work independently while managing multiple priorities concurrently.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer or Information Science or a related business field.
  • Experience working with vendor-supplied software applications in an academic environment.
  • Significant experience working in various operating systems and software environments (including Apple, Microsoft, or similar platforms and architectures).
  • Significant experience supporting complex enterprise systems.
  • Experience working within a research compliance system.
  • Project management experience.
  • Familiarity with tools for producing digital training and training materials.
  • Working knowledge of service request tracking and change management processes in technology-related industries.
  • Experience working in higher education.
  • Experience with Banner or other higher education enterprise-wide systems.
  • Familiarity with Cayuse or other similar research management systems.
  • Familiarity with sponsored research and research compliance business practices.
  • Ability to manage specialized tools in productivity platforms including calendars, project planning tools, and ticket management tools.
  • Knowledge of technical support best practices in an academic environment.
