The Animal Resources Supervisor coordinates and supervises activities to ensure that the Bio Aquatics Facility service goals related to research, teaching, husbandry and veterinary needs (laboratory animal health and well being) are consistently met. We are seeking candidates with related experience in laboratory animal care, preferably research aquatic husbandry and supervisory experience. Required Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience

  • Four years of related experience in laboratory animal care

Required Licenses and Certifications:

  • Must be able to obtain State of Texas class "C" vehicle driver license within 30 days of employment

Other Requirements:

  • This position may require occasional after hours and holiday work to care for animals

Preferred Experience:

  • Experience with research lab aquatic husbandry

  • Previous supervisory experience

Preferred Licenses and Certifications:

  • Successful completion of CMP Laboratory Animal Science Course

  • American Association of Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS)

  • Laboratory Animal Technologist (LATG) certification

Responsibilities:

  • Husbandry:  Manages aquatic research breeding colony, including maintenance of lab stocks and equipment, supervision of student workers, assurance of quality control in husbandry procedures, feeding, monitoring and maintenance of water quality, and cleaning of tanks, filters, and floors.

  • Compliance:  Coordinates all animal care program activities in accordance with IACUC and AAALAC standards and regulations with guidance from the facility director and Comparative Medicine Program veterinary staff to serve the needs of research scientists and teaching laboratory personnel.  Establishes and maintains a record system for animal records, facility records, purchases, expenses, manpower and equipment chargebacks. Also, maintains documentation for IACUC and AAALAC inspection reports and provides responses to inspections. Oversees and monitors the health of the animal populations. Reports and consults all animal care issues with the Comparative Medicine Program veterinary staff.  Ensures that animal use is tracked in accordance with IACUC guidelines as well as oversees a quality assurance program that meets AAALAC requirements.

  •   Supervision:  Accomplishes personnel management functions: hiring, training, supervising and management of the student workers serving the research, teaching and physical needs of the facility.

  •   Back-up:  Assists and serves as backup support for other departmental animal care.

  •   Ordering:  Orders necessary equipment and supplies needed for various animal rooms, as needed. Requires driving a university to deliver or pick up supplies from local vendors for urgent (possible afterhours) animal husbandry needs.

  • Teaching support:  Accomplishes Biology Department teaching laboratories and education display duties including set-up, animal acquisition, maintenance, feeding, and system breakdowns.  Conducts a public relation and educational program providing facility tours to individuals and groups of all ages, keeps an updated educational reef poster and website, and attends professional meetings.

  • Facility Upkeep: Coordinates all physical plant personnel activities within the animal care program. Performs other duties as assigned.
