Job Description

The Agency Instructor I is responsible for training various courses within the Law Enforcement Extension program. Responsible for utilizing their knowledge of adult learning theories and learning styles to maximize learner success and ensure the overall effectiveness of the course instruction. Performs classroom instruction, field-based skills training, and/or provide technical assistance in the operation of small unmanned aircraft systems (sUAS). Uses a variety of media to present course material and modify the course curriculum, when necessary, to meet learner needs. Responsible for maintaining skills and knowledge base adequate to meet current and future instructional requirements. Required to supervise and evaluate student performance as well as competently discuss procedures and regulations and apply all safety measures.

This position reports to the Training Manager.

Required Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED.

  • Four years of experience in law enforcement or related field.

  • One year of experience training adults.

Required License/Certifications:

  • Must have a valid motor vehicle operator’s license or ability to obtain within 30 days of employment.

  • Texas Commission on Law Enforcement - Basic Instructor Certification or equivalent instructor development course.

  • FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certification.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited university or college.

  • Ten years of experience in law enforcement or related field.

  • TCOLE Advanced Instructor Certification or equivalent.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to regularly use a computer/keyboard.

  • Ability to support training delivery for up to 8-10 hours a day.

  • Ability to work outdoors exposed to various weather conditions, potential allergens, elevated noise levels, and heat.

  • Physical conditioning consistent with occasional set up of classrooms, movement of light, moderate, and/or heavy training equipment, and instructional materials.

Knowledge Skills & Abilities:

  • Working knowledge of sUAS operations in a public safety response.

  • Ability to manipulate training equipment.

  • Must be able to operate multiple sUAS brands and models.

  • Ability to facilitate course content and demonstrate common police procedures or related content to groups of various sizes.

  • Knowledge of the criminal justice system or security industry and course curriculum.

  • Excellent communication and presentation skills.

  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.

  • Ability to interact positively and professionally with clients and staff.

  • Knowledge of basic office software and instructional programs.

  • Knowledge of principles and methods for teaching and instructing individuals and groups.

  • Knowledge of media production, communication, and dissemination techniques and methods.

  • Skilled in utilizing various learning and active listening strategies.

  • Ability to comprehend and express information and use inductive and deductive reasoning.

  • Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.

Notifications:

  • All tasks and job responsibilities must be performed safely without injury to self or others in compliance with System and Agency safety requirements.

  • As part of TEEX’s mission of providing training, developing practical solutions, and saving lives; this position could be required, if called upon, to deploy within the State of Texas as directed by this position’s Division Director/HQ Department Head.

  • Ability to travel independently to other and/or remote locations by driving a personal or TEEX vehicle and/or flying on commercial airlines.

Essential Duties, Tasks, and Percentages:

Training Delivery - 85%

  • Delivers course instruction and provides technical assistance for the LEX Program.

  • Ensures concerned parties, points of contact, host organizations, and agencies, are contacted and notified of schedules, locations, and times.

  • Ensures the course is effectively and efficiently presented in accordance with TEEX curriculum and customer contracts.

  • Develops customized lesson plans, outlines, training aids, manuals, and scenarios for practical application.

  • Conducts quality control of scenarios, exercises, and custom course developments.

  • Arrives before the course is scheduled to ensure the classrooms and training areas are prepared for the delivery and are set up in a safe manner.

  • Ensures all training is conducted in accordance with established safety guidelines.

  • Ensures all participants have achieved the terminal objectives of the course.

  • Ensures training materials, training aids, and classrooms are secured upon completion of the course.

  • Maintains subject matter expertise on topics of instruction.

Training Documentation - 10%

  • Collects forms at the start of class and ensures students sign the attendance roster.

  • Maintains appropriate student activity documentation.

  • Ensures course evaluations are collected and returned as instructed by the program training coordinator.

  • Completes all required course documents in a timely manner and participates in course debriefs with the instructional team, as applicable, to determine delivery areas of improvement.

Fiscal Responsibility - 5%

  • Makes sound fiscal decisions in the planning and execution of course deliveries. 

  • Completes required administrative work to include student records, travel submissions, and time/effort paperwork accurately and in a timely manner, in accordance with Division, Agency, and Program requirements.

Other Duties:

  • Completes periodic mandatory TEEX training and professional development training as assigned.

  • Interacts professionally and wears appropriate professional attire representing the Texas Engineering Extension Service (TEEX) in a positive manner.

  • Performs additional work duties as assigned.
