Cornell Cooperative Extension of Chautauqua County has an opening for part-time Ag in the Classroom/Farm to School Educator.
The Ag in the Classroom/Farm to School Educator will be responsible for assisting with program development, delivery, evaluation along with administrative direction, management, and coordination for the Ag in the Classroom program as well as supporting the increase of volume and variety of local farm products procured by schools/districts for inclusion in school meals programs.
The educator will work with Public School Districts in Cattaraugus County and specifically Olean City Schools to provide education related to agriculture as well as to develop and support school districts with utilizing the Farm to School Procurement Structure and Resource Guide.
Additionally, the Farm to School Educator will work with local farmers to develop the Cattaraugus County Farm to School Procurement Structure, as well as work with teachers and administrators, to develop a Cattaraugus County Farm to School Curriculum.

    

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
•    Master’s Degree in Agriculture, Biology, Nutrition, Education or closely related field. Bachelor’s Degree plus 4 years transferrable relevant evidence-based research experience may substitute.
•    Agriculture Background and experience relevant to the role of the position.
•    Knowledge of Farm to School programs.
•    Ability to clearly communicate (speak, read and write proficiently) in English.
•    Ability to meet travel requirements associated with this position. 
•    Ability to work flexible hours which may include evenings and/or weekends, as appropriate.
•    Proficiency with windows-based software including use of the internet and Microsoft Office Suite including Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Publisher, and Excel.
•    Ability to communicate effectively, clearly, and tactfully through verbal, written and electronic methods.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Program Development - 20%
•    Assist with development of Ag in the Classroom educational programs. Emphasis will be on the science of food production, food systems, natural resource management, agriculture career opportunities, and agriculture’s role in the community to meet identified needs and diverse interests of participants and volunteers.
•    Collaborate with the food service directors, teachers, and administrators from each district to assist with developing a Cattaraugus County Farm to School Procurement System, structure and plan.
•    Assist with Developing a Cattaraugus County Farm to School curriculum utilizing materials from the USDA Farm to School Toolkit, New York State Agricultural and Markets Farm to School materials and the Farms, Food and You and Curriculum that was developed by CCE.
•    Assist with developing Farm to School Resource Guide that will include information about the Farm to School Procurement Structure, the Farm to School Curriculum, ideas for promoting local food and farms in the cafeteria, and training food service staff to utilize locally sourced specialty crops. The Resource Guide will be a tool for districts to use to start or continue farm to school activities on their own and will be adaptable to work with private schools within the county as well as neighboring districts in Orleans, Erie and Genesee Counties.
•    Assist with identifying activities and resources necessary to implement initiatives and projects.
•    Assist Supervisor in creation of program materials to address identified needs. 
•    Assist Supervisor in making programmatic changes based on program evaluation outcomes and to meet changing local priorities.
•    Assist Supervisor in structuring programs to meet the needs of diverse program participants


Program Delivery - 40%
•    Deliver high quality educational programs and events directed at educating target audience and partners on the importance of increasing the volume and variety of local specialty crops procured by schools/districts for inclusion in school meals programs in-line with grant requirements.
•    Deliver high quality agriculture educational programs and events that address local, regional and statewide Ag in the Classroom programming priorities. Events and programs may require involvement of volunteers.
•    Deliver educational programming to food service staff related to utilization of locally sourced specialty crops in season and proper use of preparation and storage techniques staff may not be familiar with. 
•    Deliver educational programming to train food service staff on preparation techniques of locally sourced specialty crops.
•    Utilize the established Cattaraugus County Farm to School Resource Guide to initiate or expand each district’s Farm to School program.
•    Educate and provide guidance to local producers on required food safety certifications, the bid process, etc., as part of the procurement structure development process.
•    Collaborate with community agencies as requested or required to facilitate agriculture-related programs and activities.
•    Collaborate with food service staff, teachers and administrators to deliver and implement a Harvest of the Month meal program featuring local foods.
•    Interact with program participants representing CCE in a professional manner at all times.
•    Represent CCE before the public, community leaders, government officials, Cornell or other land grant universities in a professional manner as part of program delivery. 


Program Evaluation - 10%
•    Assist in the creation of evaluation framework. 
•    Interact with program participants, Association staff, program committees, county/community leaders, and other key stakeholders to collect evaluation data for improving programs.
•    Assist in analyzing collected program evaluation data for reporting and program improvement purposes using standard, established policy, procedure and methods. 
•    Assist Supervisor with evaluating each school district to determine the need for new equipment to prepare or serve locally sourced specialty crops.
•    Communicate evaluation results and findings.
•    Assist with recommending changes to strengthen and improve programs. 


Administrative Direction - 10%
•    Assist with developing initiatives to promote local products and farms as a key part of the school meals programs. 
•    Assist with developing initiatives to promote locally sourced food on the menu in the cafeteria and the integration of the Farm to School Curriculum.
•    Collaborate with food service staff to establish ways to serve and promote the local produce as a key part of the breakfast and lunch menu.
•    Assist with identifying activities and resources necessary to implement initiatives and projects.
•    Assist in identifying community and fiscal resources for program continuance and enhancement.
•    Provide supervisor with program related information to assist the budget development process.
•    Assists with development of grant program narrative based on data collected and knowledge of the program and initiatives.
•    Assist with development of marketing strategies, public affairs and special events to reach target audiences and meet program objectives.


Administrative Management - 10%
•    Assist supervisor in administrative and program management activities, as assigned.
•    Assist with monitoring program financial status to ensure compliance with funding requirements, program budget, grant specifications, and adherence to Association strategies/Plan of work.
•    Assist with identifying ways to reduce costs and maximize existing resources.
•    Assist in solving problems and resolving conflicts that arise utilizing appropriate policies and procedures.
•    Assist with effectively managing program budget allocations. 
•    Make recommendations to Supervisor regarding program budgetary needs.


Administrative Coordination/Operation - 5%
•    Maintain and prepare teaching materials necessary for Ag in the Classroom programs applying existing subject matter knowledge. 
•    Purchase new kitchen equipment to prepare and serve local food based on the direct need of each district. The equipment purchased may include items such as a salad bar, apple slicer, etc.
•    Provide administrative support for program design and for implementation of the assessment, development, delivery, research and evaluation of established educational program goals.
•    Schedule, coordinate and facilitate project-related meetings and conference calls as required or as needed.
•    Complete evaluation submission and reporting requirements following established grant criteria/plan. 
•    Provide information as requested to assist with preparation of reports, impact statements, and success stories on program progress and accomplishments for funders, advisory committees, Board and others as necessary.
•    Maintain communication with constituents and the community through variety of methods such as contributing educational articles to program newsletters, e-mails, electronic technology, internet, social media, website postings and content to increase program visibility and to address agriculture and natural resource issues. 
•    Assist with coordination of marketing and promotion of Agriculture programming through public relation initiatives and networking/collaborating with government, economic, educational and other organizations.
•    Provide information as requested to assist with preparation of reports, impact statements, and success stories on program progress and accomplishments for funders, advisory committees, Board and others as necessary.
•    Maintain records of participants, complete reports, and accurately collect and prepare paperwork as required.
•    Prepare and submit mileage, expense reports and/or vouchers in a timely manner per established policy and procedures. 
•    Maintain confidentiality of information and data collected.
•    Effectively maintain existing professional relationships with other agencies, organizations and businesses that promote effective communication and facilitate continued programming efforts.
