What we want

The Texas A&M School of Nursing is looking for an Advanced Practice Provider & Assistant Director to serve as a member of the Clinical Affairs team. This position, under the direction of the Associate Dean for Clinical and Outreach Affairs in the School of Nursing, provides primary health care to patients at various clinical sites as assigned. This role acts in accordance with relevant licensing boards and local, State, and Federal laws regulating Nurse Practitioners. Responsibilities include managing the quality, functional excellence, and operations of the School of Nursing strategic plan goals related to clinical practice. This position entails overseeing nursing and business operations pertinent to clinical practice and involves actively participating in clinical practice within the School of Nursing.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Successful completion of an approved advanced practice nursing educational program at or beyond the master’s degree level; or successful completion of an accredited educational program for Physician Assistants

Required Licenses and Certifications:

  • Eligible to be licensed as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (Nurse Practitioner) in the State of Texas; candidate must be licensed prior to start date

  • Licensure must be maintained for continued employment

  • Eligible to be licensed as a Physician Assistant in the State of Texas; candidate must be licensed prior to start date

  • American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS)

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of word processing and spreadsheet applications

  • Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others

Preferred Qualifications:

  • PhD degree in Nursing or DNP, and board certification as a nurse practitioner

  • Certified by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) or the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) as a Family Nurse Practitioner

  • Five years of clinical experience which includes three years as a Nurse Practitioner.

  • Supervisory experience is strongly preferred

  • American Heart Association Advance Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)

  • Prescriptive authority privileges through the State of Texas

  • Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) registration within 6 months of hire

  • Dual board certification, Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) and Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP)

  • National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners – Department of Transportation (DOT)

  • Knowledge of ICD 10 and CPT billing and coding principles and procedures

  • Knowledge of electronic medical records software

  • Ability to demonstrate skills and competencies necessary to safely perform the assigned job, determined through on-going skills, competency assessments, and performance evaluations.

  • Sufficient proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing the English language necessary to perform the essential functions of this job, especially with regard to activities impacting patient or employee safety or security

  • Ability to effectively communicate through a variety of channels with patients, physicians, family members and co-workers in a manner consistent with a customer service focus and application of positive language principles; engages the recipient(s) and helps them understand and retain the message

Responsibilities:

  • Nurse Practitioner - Provides primary health care to patients, which includes medical examinations, ordering and interpreting diagnostic tests, prescribing medications or treatments, counseling or education regarding health maintenance and disease/injury prevention, and promotion of healthy lifestyles. Recognizes the need for consultation and/or referral for illness/injury outside the scope of practice/expertise for an advanced nurse practitioner. Performs safe, quality patient care within the scope of practice of an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse. Acts in accordance with all relevant licensing boards, local, state and federal laws regulating nurse practitioners. Meets or exceeds threshold goals for practice metrics. Completes legible, accurate, and appropriate documentation of patients’ encounters in medical records in a timely manner. Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Clinical Affairs - Plans and organizes day-to-day clinical operations, schedules, research and activities. Assesses the need for clinical staff development programs, and assists with the development, implementation, and evaluation of programs. Performs management responsibilities of recruitment, selection, orientation, scheduling, supervision, retention, and evaluation of clinical practice employees. Provides continuous employee assessment, development, and mentoring. Provides leadership and communication to maintain a competent and engaged clinical practice team by conducting regular team meetings to review policies and procedures and operational matters, rounding on all employees at designated intervals and as required, completing performance appraisals, conducting new hire feedback sessions, coaching/corrective counseling, and providing recognition/commendations to achieve desired outcomes. Provides timely guidance and feedback to help others strengthen specific knowledge/skill areas needed to accomplish a task or solve a problem. Facilitates the promotion of teamwork within and between practice sites; participates and/or leads and facilitates clinical site process improvements as needed. Establishes and maintains open communication channels with other health professionals and team members. Responds to employee, patient, and physician concerns, taking appropriate action and channeling concerns according to appropriate procedures. Ensures a safe and effective working environment; monitors and/or revises safety plan and/or any specific accreditation/regulatory required safety guidelines, including infection control principles. Monitors and confirms staff maintain their required credentials that demonstrate competency per accrediting agency or department guidelines as applicable.Uses and optimizes information systems to enhance operations. Integrates, modifies and contributes to professional practice standards, policies, procedures, and protocols by overseeing clinical projects, research, and interprofessional team activities. Monitors self and employee compliance to policies, procedures, and System HR Standards of Practice and performs associated actions upon non-compliance. Assists in the development of clinical practice budgets and audits expenses within approved budget parameters, ensuring that practice initiatives meet the budgeted/ revenue and/or expense. Serves on committees, participates in accreditation processes, assists with in-service education, and assists in the preparation of educational materials and other activities supportive of the mission of the School of Nursing’s clinical practice plan.
