Job Description

The Academic Success Coach I at Texas A&M University - Texarkana provides undergraduate academic advising, course planning to timely graduation, coaching, and professional support and guidance for all undergraduate students.  The Academic Success Coach builds meaningful relationships with students, makes appropriate referrals and acts proactively to address barriers to academic success and graduation. This position reports to the Director of Academic Advising and Student Success.

Salary Information: Expected range is $39,000 - $41,000 annually.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES :

  • Provides academic advising for all undergraduate students grounded in tenets of practice outlined by the National Association of Academic Advising (NACADA), Appreciate Advising, or Intrusive Advising.
  • Address individual academic, financial, career, and social issues that affect the success of undergraduate students.
  • Advises for course selection, registration, planning, goal setting, appropriate resources, transitioning to the university, and retention issues.
  • Advises in both group and individual settings with current and prospective students.
  • Monitors undergraduate academic progress, plan and execute intervention strategies for students who receive academic alerts or who need assistance in maintaining or improving their academic standing.
  • Promotes student learning, development, and personal growth to empower self-sufficiency.
  • Provides goal-oriented advising prior to or during the first year to foster informed choices in student’s educational planning. Suggests and directs access of university resources relevant to career exploration.
  • Manages/coordinates advising projects, events, outreach, and interventions for all students, including specific student populations.
  • Assist with executing retention programs and interventions for all students.
  • Actively seeks to identify and address individual, organizational, and environmental conditions that foster or inhibit student success.
  • Collaborates with members of the campus community in student retention initiatives.
  • Cultivates and models a proactive mindset, student advocacy, and effective communication within the department of Academic Advising and across campus.
  • Mentors and builds strong relationships with other advisors.
  • Comply with all state, system, and university policies, regulations, rules, procedures, guidelines, and directives in a timely manner and adhere to confidentiality policies (FERPA).
  • Seek opportunities to serve and contribute on appropriate committees and task forces across campus to advocate for students.
  • Assist the entire campus community with the marketing and recruiting new students.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES :

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in applicable field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • No prior experience required.
  • Knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications.
  • Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in higher education, college student personnel, counseling, psychology, or related field from an accredited institution and one year experience in academic advising, recruiting, coaching, degree planning, or career counseling.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of working with at-risk college students and creating appropriate interventions plans.
  • Experience effectively advising and assisting higher education students, including first year students.
  • Ability to work effectively with parents, students, faculty, and staff.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and implement programs for student success.
  • Strong knowledge and experience providing effective customer service.
  • Ability to work effectively with a wide variety of individuals using excellent interpersonal skills, listening skills, and communication skills, to convince, influence, and direct students, faculty, or staff.
  • Three (3) years of experience working in education

Other Requirements

  • Work beyond normal office hours and/or work on weekends.
  • Ability to work with sensitive information and maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to work in a team-oriented environment that is dedicated to assisting others achieve their fullest potential.
