Job Description

The Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts at Arizona State University is seeking an Academic Success Advisor to support the academic success team in the Office of Student Success. The Academic Success Advisor promotes and supports student retention and graduation university-wide and advises students in making timely progress toward degree completion through a range of in-person and virtual academic counseling and support strategies.

Essential Duties

  • Provides individual and group academic advising for the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts students.   
  • Works closely and collaboratively with students, faculty, and staff to support academic success.   
  • Conducts workshops for students, parents and/or high school/community college advisors/counselors about ASU and the Herberger Institute programs, policies and procedures.   
  • Interviews and counsels undergraduate and prospective students regarding policies, procedures and academic requirements.   
  • Presents academic information to new students and parents during freshman orientation programs.   
  • Disseminates information and guidance regarding enrollment procedures, program admission criteria and process, major map requirements and course selection.   
  • Maintains student files and records.   
  • Monitors student academic progress and program effectiveness using a variety of technology-based tools (such as degree progress, customer relationship management, and analytics software/tools), and the application of retention focused strategies, and relevant advising/student development/engagement theories.   
  • Proactively monitors student academic performance; addresses, responds to, and works to resolve student concerns, questions, or issues;  collaborates closely with students to identify all academic options including, but not limited to: degrees, tutoring, counseling, career services, success coaches, extracurricular activities, study abroad program(s), research, and internships; supports and provides counsel to students in selection of options best suited to the student's goals, interests, and skills.   
  • Acts as a college/department/school representative to current and prospective students, faculty, staff, and external groups on issues related to academic success.  
  • Works to ensure ongoing satisfaction for students with their program and degree progress, provides follow up to ensure satisfaction with and effectiveness of services, and utilizes a variety of university data and programmatic direction to promote student academic success.    
  • Regularly monitors assessment resources to refine and build effective practices. Works collaboratively and collegially with academic unit and services throughout the university to facilitate comprehensive student support.   
Days and Schedule:  

Regular business hours (8am-5pm/Monday-Friday); with the ability to work flexible shifts to support events, students and faculty when needed. 


Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree AND one (1) year or more previous experience in one or more of the following: advising, student recruitment/retention or related student services utilizing a proactive and innovative approach which results in demonstrated outcomes in retention, graduation, and academic planning; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of design and the arts  
  • Experience in a higher education environment  
  • Knowledge of university and Herberger Institute curricular requirements  
  • Ability to direct and provide support to undergraduate and/or graduate students enrolled at the university.   
  • Ability to utilize a wide range of software, advising theories and retention-focused strategies.  
  • Experience in designing presentation materials and giving oral presentations in group settings  
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and comfortable working in an environment focused on continuous improvement and innovation  
  • Evidence of effective written and verbal communication skills  

Working Environment

  • Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and manipulating a computer mouse
  • Required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work
  • Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds
  • Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities, which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts.

Flexible work options (after 3 months of service with the Herberger Institute, contingent on the need of the Unit/School and performance)
•             Alternative work schedules can include four, 10-hour workdays in a workweek; a nine-day, 80-hour schedule over two workweeks for exempt employees only; and staggered start and stop times.
•             Hybrid work is an arrangement where employees spend a minimum of 60% of their regular workweek at their primary ASU work location. Dean or vice president-level approval is required.
