Job Summary
The College of Health Science & Public Health at Eastern Washington University (EWU) is currently seeking a full-time Clinical Assistant for the Department of Occupational Therapy. We are inviting applications from qualified occupational therapists to serve as a full-time Academic Fieldwork Coordinator-Clinical Assistant faculty. Appointment for this position will begin on August 16, 2024.
This is a full-time, 9-month faculty appointment (mid-Aug through mid-May). This position has an expectation of availability for a separate summer appointment. The summer appointment is based on funding and needs of the university, college, and department. Summer appointment salary will be prorated based on the amount of summer months and the 9-month salary of $76,008.
The Academic Fieldwork Coordinator (AFWC)-Clinical Assistant responsibilities include the following activities:
  • supervise and coordinate all fieldwork experiences for OT students;
  • assist OT students in their professional development and internships;
  • establish and maintain relationships with the on-site fieldwork educators and provide training and support to enhance their student programs;
  • initiate new contracts with hospitals, clinics, schools and emerging practice sites; and
  • complete all AOTA and ACOTE documentation related to fieldwork experiences.

The Department of Occupational Therapy offers a competitive graduate program for the Master of Occupational Therapy. The MOT program is conducted in a cohort model with 32 students per cohort. The program is completed in 2.5 years. Students complete all academic work during the first two years followed by two 3-month clinical internships.
The Department of Occupational Therapy is located within the College of Health Science and Public Health (CHSPH) on the downtown Spokane campus. As a premier college serving the educational needs of the health care practitioners, CHSPH includes nursing, physical therapy, communication sciences and disorders, public health and health administration, wellness and movement sciences, dental hygiene, and Regional Initiatives in Dental Education (RIDE).

Required Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in occupational therapy (MOT or MSOT), Post-Professional Master of occupational therapy or Master of science in occupational therapy degree
  • Minimum of three years of clinical experience in a variety of practice areas
  • Experience as a fieldwork educator
  • Knowledge of local practice community
  • Experience with administering complex work processes with minimal supervision, under tight timelines
  • Ability to be persuasive and persistent when seeking placement leads
  • Experience working with inter-professional colleagues
  • Licensed or eligible for licensure as an Occupational Therapist in the State of Washington
  • Excellent interpersonal communication and problem-solving skills as reported by professional peers
  • Demonstrated ability to apply a culturally responsive and flexible approach that is supportive to the diverse needs, including universal accessibility, of our students, faculty, staff and the public

Preferred Qualifications
  • Doctorate degree in occupational therapy or an entry-level OT degree and a terminal doctorate degree in another health-related field

  • Completion of the AOTA fieldwork educator training

Responsibility / Duty
Responsibilities for the AFWC-Clinical Assistant faculty include the following:
  • Oversee day to day operations of the fieldwork program for the Department of Occupational Therapy.
    • Direct, implement, coordinate and supervise fieldwork operations for the department.
    • Direct all fieldwork meetings, including agendas, action items, etc.
    • Direct utilization of facilities and other resources related to fieldwork.
    • Oversee all aspects of fieldwork.
    • Analyze, investigate and resolve situations to ensure student success in fieldwork.
    • Direct tasks and projects to others to meet deadlines and monitor outcomes to ensure deadlines are met.
    • Initiate and implement new fieldwork procedures.
    • Enforce compliance of university, department and fieldwork policies and procedures including relevant collective bargaining agreements.
    • Represent department and fieldwork program within the University and with external entities to maintain relationships that facilitate fieldwork operations.
    • Oversee the identification of appropriate professional development opportunities for OT students.
    • Provide consultation to fieldwork educators and to students while in fieldwork.
    • Oversee all processes related to fieldwork placements; prepare related paperwork and forms.
    • As part of program evaluation, forecast future fieldwork needs; research trends, clinical techniques, and other topical areas.
    • Manage oversight of Fieldwork Advisory Committee.
    • Teach all fieldwork related courses
    • Advisor for a cohort of 32-34 students in all Fieldwork Level II clinical placements
    • In collaboration with the Department Chair and/or Program Director, oversee Program Specialist 2
  • Manage contracts related to fieldwork placements.
    • In collaboration with EWU Contracts Manager, monitor all contracts for the fieldwork program. Initiate and complete new contracts with hospitals, clinics, schools and emerging practice sites.
    • Approve or recommend for approval new contracts.
  • Establish and maintain productive working relationships with fieldwork sites
    • Resolve and investigate any problems related to fieldwork.
    • Develop and direct the dissemination of fieldwork and student outcomes reports.
    • Oversee, establish and maintain relationships with student coordinators and fieldwork educators.
    • Recommend and provide training and support to enhance fieldwork site student programs.
  • Develop and manage fieldwork experiences
    • Manage and supervise day to day fieldwork experiences. Investigate and resolve problems with the placements.
    • Direct or refer issues, tasks and projects to other departmental staff, Chair, and/or faculty when appropriate.
    • Analyze, investigate and resolve fieldwork problems and complaints with the assistance of the chair.
    • Manage and conduct student advising pertaining to fieldwork.
    • Initiate implementation of problem resolution.
    • Verify students and placement sites fully understand roles and expectations related to the fieldwork experience.
    • Assist OT students in their professional development and internships.
  • Teaching (NOTE: though this is primarily the AFWC position, some teaching beyond AFWC related courses may be required.)
    • Teach all fieldwork-related courses.
    • Teach and evaluate students in fieldwork-related courses.
    • Actively participate in assessment of student learning.
  • Accreditation
    • Review and understand all Accreditation Council of Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE) standards related to fieldwork I & II.
    • Ensure compliance on all ACOTE standards related to fieldwork I & II
    • Complete all ACOTE accreditation/reaccreditation documentation including all self-study, and initial accreditation content; annual review reports; and ACOTE accreditation site visit requirements.
