Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in applicable field or equivalent combination of education and experience

  • Two years of experience in advising, recruiting, teaching, coaching, Student Affairs, or other related area

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications

  • Knowledge of student information systems, degree planning, and degree audits 

  • Ability to present information clearly and concisely

  • Ability to work with sensitive information and maintain confidentiality 

  • Excellent written communication, analytical, interpersonal, and organizational skills 

  • High degree of self-initiative and ability to think and work independently

  • Ability to work with diverse groups of people and be helpful, respectful, approachable, and team oriented 

  • Ability to build strong working relationships and a positive work environment

  • Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Degree in liberal arts or general subject area of placement 

  • Master’s degree or above in education, counseling, liberal arts, or general subject area of placement

  • Experience with TAMU policies and procedures

  • Experience with undergraduate degree programs in general subject area of placement

  • COMPASS and HOWDY proficiency

Responsibilities:

  • Academic Advising - Delivers academic advice and other services to current and prospective undergraduate students as well as their parents and other clients including University administrators and resource providers; works to improve academic advising services, to enhance retention and graduation rates, to provide exceptional experiences for undergraduate students, and to develop community within and lifelong affinity for the Department of Sociology and the College of Liberal Arts.

  • Advising Processes - Reviews degree plans with students and advises students with academic, probationary, and financial concerns; processes academic changes (Q-drops, withdrawals, curriculum changes, etc.) according to College and University policies. Makes referrals to University and off-campus resources. Assists students requesting appeals. Uses COMPASS for checking student records and processing changes; maintains records of student contacts.

  • Program Development - Assists with developing and implementing programs for specific student academic populations; evaluates advising services, develops reports for the department including advising activity and internal/external enrollments; analyzes trends; makes recommendations for improvements. Encourages and provides information to majors and minors on participating in learning communities or critical thinking seminars, studying abroad, undergraduate research with faculty members, honors programs, seeking and securing internships, and completing directed studies. Assists faculty with first year transfer seminar.

  • Prospective and New Student Advising - Responsible for development and implementation of New Student Conferences. Meets with freshmen and transfer students during new student orientation conferences. Work with prospective transfer students regarding requirements for admission and course transfer to ensure they are eligible for admission review. May develop and conduct high school, community college, and college recruitment programs.  Work with readmitted students to facilitate re-entry into the university and creating a degree plan for them. Perform other duties as assigned.
