Job Summary

The Academic Advisor II, under supervision, fulfills the following responsibilities while providing a holistic and equitable approach to advising and building meaningful relationships with students.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Offers academic advice and guidance to students, considers individual needs and goals, engages in one-on-one, in-person meetings, and creates a supportive and confidential environment.

  • Determines the appropriate course of action for students, assists in navigating personal challenges, offers guidance on academic, probationary, and financial concerns, and collaborates with other campus services as needed to ensure comprehensive support for students.

  • Communicates regularly and includes the student in course planning processes, supports students in exploring different courses to help them make informed decisions with tools like Degree Works, Starfish, and JNET.

  • Provides guidance and assistance to students, follows and meets all deadlines regarding registration, adds/drops, withdrawals, changes of major, graduation applications and graduation checkout.

  • Conducts thorough and frequent reviews and updates of academic records and degree plans, including test scores and placement. Verifies student’s progress and degree requirements.

  • Responds to inquiries from prospective students, current students, campus entities and the community.

  • Develops training materials and actively participates in events, and programing aimed at enhancing student engagement, retention, success and sense of belonging.

  • Supports college faculty through communications regarding course, classroom, or program needs/concerns.

  • Stay attune of best practices and attend professional development.

The above outlines the major duties, responsibilities, and authorities of the Academic Advisor II position, emphasizing an intentional and holistic approach to advising. It may not include all tasks and functions, as additional duties may be assigned to address specific needs and promote student success.

Minimum Requirements

Education – Bachelor’s degree in applicable field or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Experience – Two years of related experience.

Knowledge of – Knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications. Knowledge of student information systems, degree planning, and degree audits.

Ability to – Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others. Ability to present information clearly and concisely. Ability to work with sensitive information and maintain confidentiality. Excellent written communication, analytical, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
