We are looking for an Academic Advisor I, to join our transformative, pioneering School of Education and Human Development. This position is essential for our college's growth. The Academic Advisor, under general supervision, recruits and advises undergraduate students concerning their career goals and academic requirements for the Department of Kinesiology and Sports Management. Required Education:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience. 

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.

  • Ability to present information clearly and concisely.

  • Ability to work with sensitive information and maintain confidentiality.

  • Excellent written communication, analytical, interpersonal, and organizational skills.  

Other Requirements:

  • Work beyond normal office hours and/or work on weekends.

  • Travel required.

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Master's degree in Health and Kinesiology or Education. 

  • Two years of related experience in advising and recruiting.

  • Demonstrated experience working with diverse populations.

  • Experience working with students in a university setting.

  • Experience working as an academic advisor or in another academic affairs support unit.

  • Experience working with BANNER Student Information System.

  • Experience with EAB Navigate.

  • Experience working with students in an educational setting.

  • Experience working with diverse populations.

  • Experience with MS Outlook and MS Office Suite including MS Excel.

  • Experience speaking in front of large crowds. 

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Exceptional attention to detail.

  • Ability to effectively communicate, both verbally and in writing.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.

  • Ability to maintain a professional demeanor, including tact, discretion, and exceptional customer- service in all aspects of the position.

  • Working knowledge of COMPASS and Navigate (EAB).  

  • Knowledge of Texas A&M University policies and procedures. 

Responsibilities:

  • Academic Advising - Provides academic advice to undergraduate students. Meets with students and prospective students in areas concerning college admission and readmission, professional concerns, housing, financial aid, student services, degree programs, academic schedules, course schedules, course planning and selections, major options and career and educational goals. 

  • Administrative Duties - Maintains undergraduate student database to include record of courses completed, catalog, classification, graduation, change of major. Creates reports for Department Head, Division Chairs, and Undergraduate Coordinator. 

  • Recruitment and Retention - Serves to facilitate the application and admission of students, and retention of students. Conducts various recruitment programs. Responds to inquiries from students, prospective students and parents. Fosters retention of identified groups of students through activities such as mentoring, monitoring student grades, and other support service. 

  • Update Student Records - Processes add/drops, Q-drops, change of curriculum and course substitutions. Monitors degree requirements and verifies completion of requirements. Interacts with faculty to provide an exchange of information to enhance the advisement of students. Has knowledge of and interprets University and college policies and procedures. Uses COMPASS for student registration, degree audit, course prerequisites, etc. Performs other duties as assigned.
