Applications are invited for a specified purpose (estimated 12 months) post of a Women in HE Project Officer within UCD Access & Lifelong Learning.
The role of UCD Access & Lifelong Learning (ALL) is to support the University to become a diverse and inclusive scholarly community. The proportion of Access Students in UCD has now risen to over one-third of the student population (34.6%). However, increasing the participation of mature students remains a work in progress. This post will address the dearth of mature students in higher education (HEA, 2021), and the low participation of mature women from low-income households. Reporting to the Deputy Director, the Women in HE Project Officer will be a key member of the ALL team.
Women's participation in higher education has long been recognised as significant due to the link between education and reward. Evidence suggests that current participation patterns in higher education continue to reinforce status distinctions for some groups. In this context, UCD is a recognised leader in ensuring access and inclusion is a strategic whole-institution priority (UCD, 2017, 2020). Uniquely, the University has pioneered a University for All approach; the central theme of which is ensure the creation of a `level playing field' that ensures that all students feel welcome, belong and are valued. This post will address the gap in the participation of women from low-income households in higher education. It will be a demonstration project that will develop a methodology, process and resources that will allow it to be replicated and applied to the widening participation of under-represented students in higher education
The successful candidate will contribute to the University's commitment to widening participation and enhancing access for all students, fostering an inclusive environment that mainstreams diversity and equality. The use of evidence, including data metrics, to analyse, inform and shape the process will be central to the role.
The Women in HE Project Officer will identify, resource and implement universally designed strategies to maximise the engagement and participation of women from low-income households in UCD. The five-year post will work with the ALL team, the WP Reps and VPs of T&L to enhance and optimise student success.
The appointed candidate will have substantial experience of supporting students. They will apply specialist knowledge to the further development and delivery of a high-quality service for students.
