Technical Instructor in Making

Founded in 1837, the Royal College of Art is the world’s largest community of postgraduate art and design students. We are looking for an experienced, adaptable, dynamic and highly motivated person to work with our Making technical team at the Royal College of Art. The Making workshops include Bench areas, Wood and Metal workshops and cover 3 campuses.

The day job as a Technical Instructor in Making:

• Provide technical support, advice, and demonstrations in Making spaces.
• Deliver technical instruction in Bench areas, wood and metal workshops, using hand tools, power tools, wood and metal work equipment, in a workshop environment.
• Assist students and staff in problem solving and finding technical solutions.
• Maintain specialist equipment and applicable health and safety, keeping accurate records. 
• Support College Teaching, Learning, Research activity as appropriate for the role.

What you will need to have:

• Knowledge and experience of a variety of making processes such as wood work, metal work, plastics and model making skills.
• A practical understanding of wood construction, metal fabrication, model making techniques and prototyping.
• Experience of delivering in-person technical instruction.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills in a dynamic, fast paced environment.
• The ability to use initiative and work as part of a team.
• Excellent organisational, time management, planning and problem solving skills.
• Excellent user focus and a flexible approach.
• Knowledge of Health and Safety issues and Risk Assessment procedures.
