Teaching Associate in Biomedical Sciences

Applications are invited for up to 6 Teaching Associate posts in the School of Biosciences at Cardiff University.

These are part-time, fixed-term posts for 5 years, available immediately.
The successful candidates will be dedicated to finding creative solutions and have a genuine curiosity and enthusiasm to deliver high-quality teaching and rigorous assessment for existing modules on our undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in areas of Biomedical Sciences.
Each post will involve working part-time as a Teaching Associate within the School, with the opportunity to also study towards a PhD part-time alongside, with all associated tuition fees paid and a pro-rata stipend of £7,504, in one of the School’s research groups. Applicants are encouraged to contact potential supervisors within the School to refine and align their research ideas with the research strategy of the School.
Working closely with the Director of Learning & Teaching, you will contribute to the organisation and running of the undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, and provision of the student experience. You will also be supported towards gaining recognition as an Associate Fellow of AdvanceHE (AFHEA).

These are part-time (17.5 hours per week) and fixed-term posts for 5 years, with the associated opportunity to study part-time for a PhD qualification alongside. The package offered if accepted for a part-time PhD includes all tuition fees and a pro-rata annual stipend payment of £7,504.
The Teaching Associate appointments will be made, dependent on relevant qualifications and experience, within the Grade 5 scale.
Salary:  £27,025 - £31,302 per annum, pro-rata for hours worked (Grade 5)

Job Description

Prepare and deliver whole or parts of modules including contributing to the assessment of students.  Deliver lectures as required (content supplied). Undertake seminars, tutorials, laboratory practical sessions and group work.  Supervise student projects and carry out teaching-related administrative duties. Teaching contributions are within a framework of an agreed programme typically overseen by an academic member of staff. Work on an individual research project under the guidance of your PhD supervisor within the School’s research groups.

Key duties
* Deliver teaching courses. Includes preparing teaching material, communicating subject matter and encouraging critical discourse to develop rational thinking; observing and reacting to student interventions; responding to questions outside class times and to contingencies in course delivery.
* Carry out pre-determined assessment for courses, including marking and providing written/oral feedback; and collating and providing final assessments of students.
* Oversee undergraduate and postgraduate taught project students.
* Participate actively as a member of a teaching team.
* Carry out course evaluation, including facilitating student feedback; reflecting on own teaching design and delivery; and implementing ideas for improving own performance.
* Carry out administrative duties such as class record keeping, attending meetings, and report writing. Teaching-related and administrative work is allocated by the Head of Department and various Committees and is within a clear and established programme with assistance and support.
* Plan and prioritise own daily work, and forward plan for some teaching.
* Deal with reactive requests such as those relating to teaching, laboratory practical sessions, supervising students and administrative tasks, on a daily basis.

Essential Criteria

1. Good first degree (2:1 or above) in a relevant subject and/or equivalent experience.
2. Awareness and experience of teaching methodologies relevant to Biomedical Sciences
3. Awareness and understanding of the research context relevant to the School.
4. Ability to deliver individual modules and teaching programme(s).
5. Effective interpersonal skills to liaise with students and staff.
6. Excellent communication skills with the ability to present complex information clearly and confidently to others using a range of media.
7. Evidence of ability to work under pressure and to strict timescales.
8. Proven ability to work as a team and independently without close supervision with the ability to deal with reactive requests relating to teaching, supervising students and administrative tasks.
9. Ability to be pro-active in organisation and planning, foresee problems and take action accordingly.

Desirable Criteria

1. Masters degree in a relevant subject
2. Fluency in Welsh (written and oral)
