The post-holder will spend their time working as part of a team testing various novel compounds for anti-inflammatory effects on cells from COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) patients and controls. The post-holder will have experience in aseptic technique and cell culture as well as some of the following techniques: RNA extraction from cells and tissue, real-time PCR, western blotting, ELISA, protein extraction from cells and tissue. The post-holder will be expected to collect samples obtained from clinical and research studies, as well as lung samples obtained at the time of surgery. These samples will need to be processed so that they can be used for cell culture studies and for bacterial culture and quantitation. The post holder will be involved in general laboratory maintenance as well as the processing, and will ensure all sample records are maintained.  Training will be given in laboratory techniques where needed. Due to dependence of the work on patient samples, working hours may be spread across a 7 day week. We are looking for a candidate with laboratory experience. A confident team player is needed to interact with clinical and non-clinical staff in a multidisciplinary team environment.
