Job summary

We are seeking a skilled and highly motivated experienced Research Technician to work in the Division of Cancer at Imperial College London. You will work under the supervision of Dr Paula Cunnea and Professor Christina Fotopoulou, whose group focuses broadly on intra-tumoural heterogeneity of ovarian cancer, and development of novel ex vivo systems for prediction of response and relapse. The current position will support our laboratory’s ongoing translational cancer research.

Duties and responsibilities

You will fulfil an important role within the group, collecting, processing and managing tumour tissue, ascites and blood samples for the project, and maintaining a biobank for these samples for cancer biomarker research. You will also prepare these samples for primary cell culturing and 3D models such as organoids and tumour explants. You will perform key supporting tasks towards the development of drug response assays in 3D models of ovarian cancer, working independently, and as part of the team. This will involve performing experiments (e.g. ELISA, primary cell culture, and basic histology techniques, immunostaining, light and fluorescent microscopy, western blotting), analysing data, presenting results and supporting students. You will also be involved in the day-to-day smooth running and maintenance of the laboratory and performing experiments which contribute towards the research projects.

Essential requirements

You should have a Masters degree in Molecular, Cellular or Cancer Biology, or equivalent. Previous laboratory and research experience is essential, with competency in general wet molecular and cellular biology lab techniques. Experience in handling of human tumour tissue and blood samples is essential.

You should be motivated, have a flexible approach to tasks and able to work effectively independently. Excellent communication and organisational skills are also necessary, in addition to strong inter-personal skills with an ability to work co-operatively in a multidisciplinary setting. Previous knowledge of ovarian cancer or cancer biology is desirable. You are expected to have acquired the essential skills, knowledge, experience and abilities required of the post and as outlined in the person specification.
