Research Services (RS) operates under the directorate of Research Policy Unit (RPU) and under the leadership of the Head of Research Services and the Dean of Research. Research Services is the primary central Professional Service for: supporting the development of both, externally and internally funded research projects and funded programmes; the enhancement of research quality and developing our Research Excellence Framework (REF) submissions; coordination of research integrity activities ethics, policy, governance and compliance with research Concordant's; development and implementation of research systems and research operations as well as contributing to researcher development activities (with Doctoral College).

As a Research Impact Officer, you will work in partnership with professional and academic colleagues to develop, stimulate and support a wide range of impact activities, including: increased public and policy engagement, impact support as relevant within both, grant applications and for funded projects as well as preparing impact documentation for research assessments.

The role holder will have a thorough knowledge of research impact within funding and/or assessment exercises and will use this to develop and deliver training, provide dedicated support and proactively identify opportunities. The post is key to support the development of a stronger research culture and via working with the IP team to assist researchers to extend the reach and significance of their impact through activities such as knowledge exchange, IP, commercialisation.

Alongside colleagues in the Impact team and research development and Funding team, the Impact Officer will provide input and comprehensive advice and support to future research assessment exercises and manage a portfolio of impact case studies, supporting the researching, sourcing, evaluating and curating of evidence to support case studies in accordance with sponsors’ guidance.

You will have: 

  • A robust and comprehensive understanding of research impact in HEIs
  • Knowledge of research impact and management in HE, including an excellent understanding or experience of impact requirements in research assessment (REF).
  • Ability to develop and maintain excellent working relationships with colleagues, and external stakeholders, with credibility to engage and influence.
  • A proactive approach to work
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate complex information, including experience of writing for different audiences and different media.

The role holder will be expected to initiate and/or join impact networks both internally and externally, ensuring the University’s reputation is enhanced regionally, nationally and internationally.
