A Postdoctoral Research Fellow position is available in Large Language Model Machine Learning at the Middlesex University, London Department of Computing in connection with the JUDDGES CHIST-ERA project. The project’s goals are the development of legal tools applicable across national jurisdictions. Middlesex’s role will be to develop the high-level Large Language Model Machine Learning (LLM) reasoning component of JUDDGES.

The post-holder will develop novel mechanisms to help achieve this, involving deep learning and potentially also stochastic logic-based approaches. The successful applicant will apply these methods on data generated by the project but will also be encouraged to develop additional spin-off research interests as the project progresses. Candidates are required to have a background in LLM machine-learning methodological development, in particular prior experience in developing Large Language Models for the judicial domain. A strong track record of machine learning publication is a necessary requirement for the post; the ability to code developed ML methods, experience with data sets and an ability to work as part of a team are also essential.

Middlesex University is a global university with campuses in Hendon, London, Dubai, Mauritius and Malta. The Faculty of Science and Technology delivers high quality teaching, research and consultancy across several disciplines including computer science, informatics and networking/telecommunications. In the last REF, 56 staff where submitted leading to an excellent REF outcome in the Computer Science and Informatics unit of submission and Middlesex was placed 13th for power rankings overall across the sector. In the London area alone, the Research Fortnight Power rankings placed Middlesex as the 4th largest department for computing research.
