Job description
Job summary

The Department of Chemical Engineering is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Corrosion Engineering who is experienced in corrosion research, with an emphasis on experimental corrosion rate measurements.  Working closely with a major international company, you will take the lead in measuring rates of metal corrosion in crude oil and CO2  process lines which are detrimental to process plant operations. You will be a member of a small team working at Imperial College and with our industrial partner on the project. Some overseas travel to meet with our industrial partners will be required.

Duties and responsibilities

To carry out a research programme in corrosion engineering, with a specific task of determining the rate and extent of metal corrosion as a function of key process variable including temperature, pressure and chemical composition. You will also support related research activities focussed on identifying the critical trace chemical species present in the process stream which are initiating the corrosion events.

Essential requirements

  • Perform corrosion engineering-based research using advanced experimental methods of determining corrosion rates, as a function of complex process variables including temperature, pressure and feedstock chemical composition.

  • Contribute to the design, manufacture and development of two experimental corrosion rigs to be built in the Department for this project.

  • Operate these corrosion rigs for determining the fundamentals of the rate and extent of metal corrosion as a function of key process variable including temperature, pressure and chemical composition.

  • Write reports for submission to research sponsors

  • Present findings to colleagues and at conferences

  • Submit publications to refereed journals

*Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as Research Assistant within the salary range £40,694 – £43,888 per annum.
