Research Associate
School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences

We are looking for a passionate, dynamic Post-Doctoral Researcher to join the Cardiff University School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences and Centre for Trials Research to work on a qualitative study investigating the views and perceptions of those involved (participants/carers/trial team members) in a clinical trial of an advanced neurosurgical intervention. We are seeking an excellent candidate, with a relevant PhD, to deliver this project, along with opportunities to develop the candidates own research interests. Candidates should have an emerging or established national profile, with evidence of a publication profile.

The post will be based at School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Cardiff, UK under the supervision of Dr Emma Lane and working closely with Dr Cheney Drew of the Centre for Trials Research with additional input from other study team members.

Your role will be in the data collection and analysis through interviewing participants of the TransEUro clinical trial which examined the potential of cell transplantation for the treatment of neurodegenerative disorder Parkinson’s disease. You will be working as part of the wider LEARN study team to generate outputs in formats for our identified stakeholders which will be shaped through consultation with our participant advisory group and Independent advisory group. You will have a background in health psychology, qualitative methodology or clinical trial design and ideally an understanding of neurodegenerative diseases with experience of public involvement and/or engagement.

The post is full time, 35 hours per week and fixed term from 1 October 2021 to 31 May 2022.

Salary: £33,797 - £40,322 per annum (Grade 6).  Please note that it is not expected that we will appoint above grade 6.30 currently £33 797 per annum.

Job Description

JOB PURPOSE

To conduct research within the LEARN-TransEUro qualitative research study and support the generation of appropriate outputs. To contribute to the overall research performance of the School and University, carrying out research leading to the publishing of high-quality research.

MAIN DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Research

  • To conduct research within LEARN-TransEUro qualitative research study including data collection and analysis
  • To liase with the study advisory groups to identify stakeholders and work with the wider LEARN study team to generate a range of outputs in appropriate formats as informed by the advisory groups.
  • To contribute to the overall research performance of the School and University by the production of measurable outputs including bidding for funding, publishing in national academic journals and conferences
  • To develop research objectives and proposals for own or joint research including research funding proposals
  • To attend and or present at conferences/seminars at a local and national level as required
  • To undertake administrative tasks associated with the research project, including the planning and organisation of the project and the implementation of procedures required to ensure accurate and timely reporting
  • To prepare research ethics and research governance applications as appropriate
  • To review and synthesise existing research literature within the field
  • To participate in School research activities.
  • To build and create networks both internally and externally to the university, to influence decisions, explore future research requirements, and share research ideas for the benefit of research projects
Other
  • To engage effectively with industrial, commercial and public sector organisations, professional institutions, other academic institutions etc., regionally and nationally to raise awareness of the School’s profile, to cultivate strategically valuable alliances, and to pursue opportunities for collaboration across a range of activities. These activities are expected to contribute to the School and the enhancement of its regional and national profile.
  • To undergo personal and professional development that is appropriate to and which will enhance performance.

Person Specification

Essential Criteria

Qualifications and Education
1. Postgraduate degree at PhD level (or nearing completion / submission) in a related subject area or relevant industrial experience

Knowledge, Skills and Experience
2. An established expertise and proven portfolio of research and/or relevant industrial experience within qualitative methods
3. Knowledge of current status of qualitative research methods
4. Proven ability to publish in national journals
5. Knowledge and understanding of competitive research funding to be able to develop applications to funding bodies

Communication and Team Working
6. Proven ability in effective and persuasive communication
7. Ability to supervise the work of others to focus team efforts and motivate individuals

Other
8. Proven ability to demonstrate creativity, innovation and team-working within work

Desirable Criteria

1. Proven ability to work without close supervision
2. Evidence of ability to participate in and develop both internal and external networks and utilise them to enhance the research activities of the School.
3. Understanding of neurodegenerative diseases and/or clinical trial design
