Research Assistant – Neuroimaging in deteriorating brains
Cardiff School of Physics and Astronomy
We are seeking a research assistant to work closely with two labs, lead by Prof. Kevin Murphy and Dr.Lucy Hiscox, on research programmes funded by Wellcome Trust. You will be involved in neuroimaging studies of the cerebrovasculature that assess the health of the brain’s blood vessels and their deterioration with age and disease. You will also work on studies quantifying the mechanical properties of the brain and how tissue softening may contribute to neurodegenerative conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease. You would be expected to help recruit participants, to guide them through studies, to assist with the running of MRI scans and cognitive assessments, and to perform some preliminary analyses on the resulting data. This is an excellent opportunity for a promising researcher to gain experience in neuroimaging studies. Applicants from a diverse set of related academic backgrounds are welcome: psychology, neuroscience, biology, physics, etc.
This post is part of an exciting collaboration between the School of Physics and Astronomy and the Cardiff University Brain Research Imaging Centre (CUBRIC), which is housed in the School of Psychology. CUBRIC is world-renowned for combining cutting-edge neuroimaging and sophisticated physiological measurements to investigate cerebral physiology. Recently, CUBRIC has expanded into a new £44m building. The cutting-edge facilities include two 3T high-end research MRI systems, a 3T microstructure (ultra-high gradient) MRI system, 7T human MRI, ultra-low field MRI, MEG, EEG, TMS, tDCS, NIRS, a high performance computing cluster and a clinical research facility. The post represents a great opportunity to work at a world-class imaging facility and to help shape the collaboration between the School of Physics and Astronomy , the School of Psychology and CUBRIC.
The post is available full-time for 12 months.
The position is available as soon as possible, but the precise starting date is negotiable.
Salary: £32332 - £34980 per annum. (Grade 5)
Informal enquiries may be addressed to: Prof Kevin Murphy ([email protected]) and/or Dr. Lucy Hiscox ([email protected])
Closing date: 22nd April 2024
