I-Prehab Research Assistant
School of Healthcare Sciences

We seek an ambitious and well organised Research Assistant who will pursue excellence in applied cancer care research.

The successful candidate will be a key member of a multidisciplinary research team delivering on a National Institute of Health Research (NIHR) funded project to be conducted in Wales and England. The project is about inclusion in cancer prehabilitation/rehabilitation services for people in hospital and community.

This position is part-time (up to 17.5 hours per week) and fixed term until 31.03.2025.

Salary: £32,332 to £34,980 per annum, pro-rata for hours worked (Grade 5).
Appointments to roles at Cardiff University are usually made at bottom of scale unless in exceptional circumstances.

Job Description

JOB PURPOSE

The I-Prehab Research Assistant will support qualitative data collection and analysis and contribute to other research activity enabling delivery on the project plan through excellent teamwork.

MAIN DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Research Assistant

  • To undertake research support tasks, i.e. by helping to plan, set up, collect data and record the outcome of mixed methods evaluation research
  • To actively participate within the research group, communicating and presenting research at meetings, ensuring information is communicated to internal and external partners, as appropriate and under the direction of the lead I-Prehab Research Associate
  • To critically appraise relevant literature.
  • To contribute to research publications and presentations
  • To analyse with supervision and communicate complex ideas, concepts and data using appropriate methods and packages
  • To help resolve issues and support colleagues in devising procedures required to ensure accurate and timely reporting
  • To generate research output and contribute to the development of independent and original ideas as appropriate
  • To participate in School administration and activities to promote the School and its work to the wider University and the outside world
  • To engage with the annual appraisal process and undergo personal and professional development that is appropriate to and which will enhance performance.

Qualifications and Education

  • A degree in a relevant discipline, or equivalent experience
  • Knowledge, Skills and Experience
  • Knowledge of research methods and techniques within specialist health and wellbeing related field
  • Knowledge of and interest in current health and wellbeing issues for people with cancer
  • Proven ability to summarise complex information appropriately for different audiences
  • Ability to demonstrate the capability and drive to succeed in delivering a project to time and budget
  • Communication and Team Working
  • Proven communication skills, including presentation to various audiences
  • Excellent organisational and team-working skills
  • Other
  • Ability to demonstrate creativity and success in teamwork
  • Willing and able to travel to research and work sites as necessary

  • Relevant professional qualification(s).
  • Evidence of conducting research in the context of the NHS and/or primary care and/or community.
  • Evidence of collaborations with partners external to employer organisation.
  • Evidence of ability to participate in both internal and external networks and utilise them to enhance the research activities of a university.

    The successful applicant will work closely with and be directly responsible to Jane Hopkinson, Velindre Professor of Nursing and Interdisciplinary Cancer Care, lead for the Healthcare Sciences Cancer Research Group, and Trustee of Tenovus Cancer Care. They will also work with I-Prehab research team members, research partners in Wales and England, and research participants who have a cancer diagnosis. Experience of working with people with cancer would be an advantage.
