Postdoctoral Research Scientist in Cellular Neuroscience

Updated: 15 days ago
Location: Oxford, ENGLAND
Deadline: 12 Feb 2020

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral cellular neuroscientist to work at the Laboratory of Molecular Neurodegeneration at the University of Oxford to perform drug and target discovery in cellular and neuronal models of Friedreich’s ataxia (FRDA).

This is an exciting opportunity for a postdoctoral neuronal cell biologist to contribute to the development of novel therapeutic small molecules for the treatment of FRDA. In this project we will test a newly discovered lead series of compounds for biological efficacy in patient cell models, including induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC)-derived neurons. The project is a collaboration between the Wade-Martins Laboratory and Evotec and is an exemplar of academic/industry collaborative drug discovery.

Duties will include analysis of cell biology and gene expression in patient cell models of Friedreich’s ataxia; differentiation of iPSC-derived neurons; interpretation of data; design and implementation of experiments; and preparation of data for publication. You will have excellent practical experience of working with neuronal cell cultures and good knowledge of cellular models of neurodegenerative disease. The ability to innovate, trouble-shoot technical problems, be meticulous in practical work and in record keeping is also essential. Responsibilities will also include managing your own academic research and contributing to wider project planning, including ideas for new research projects and developing new scientific techniques. You will act as a source of information and advice to other members of the group on scientific protocols and experimental techniques. Applicants must hold or be near to completion of a PhD or equivalent in a biological subject and have experience in cellular neuroscience, cell biology or biochemistry.

This is a fixed-term post, funded until 31 July 2021 and is available to start on 1 April 2020. The post will be based in the Laboratory of Molecular Neurodegeneration, Le Gros Clark Building, South Parks Road, Oxford OX1 3QX.

Informal enquiries may be directed Professor Richard Wade-Martins ([email protected] ).

Closing date for applications is 12.00 midday on Wednesday 12 February 2020. Interviews are likely to be held week commencing 24 February 2020.
