Overview

About the Role

Applications are invited for a full-time Postdoctoral Research Associate (PDRA) to work on an Innovate UK – EU SMART Euraka Advanced Manufacturing grant in the group of Dr Chinnapat Panwisawas. The UK-EU project entitled: “DISTorting The Aerospace Manufacturing Boundaries: OPerational Integration Of Autonomy On Titanium (DISTOPIA)” aims to distort aerospace manufacturing boundaries by developing an automated, cost-efficient wire-fed direct energy deposition (DED) additive manufacturing approach and repairing method – made possible using novel metallic wires with enhanced mechanical properties; combined with implementation of full digital twin model of the process.

The post holder will collaborate with researchers from Authentise Ltd., Epoch Wires, Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre at University of Sheffield, Turkish aerospace company, to name a few, to explore the cutting-edge technology on digital twin of repair technology for aerospace components.

About You

Applicants should hold a PhD degree in Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgy and Materials, or a relevant subject (e.g. Materials Science, Engineering Mechanics, Applied Mathematics, Aerospace Engineering, Physics), or be near completion.

The post will develop rapid thermal-fluid flow modelling to integrate all interfacial phenomena in DED process to correctly capture thermal signature and predict some characteristics of the produced microstructure with predictive capability as a function of process conditions. A strong foundation in computational materials engineering, programming skill and knowledge of the mechanics of materials is essential.

About the School

The School of Engineering and Materials Science (SEMS) has 1,697 UK undergraduate students plus 950 international students and 252 PhD students. We have 108 academic staffs to provide outstanding degree programmes coupled with internationally leading research which is reflected in all our undergraduate programmes. Our taught postgraduate programmes are similarly first class and provide students with a fantastic opportunity to engage with cutting-edge research in: Bioengineering, Intelligent Transport, Sustainable Engineering, and Engineering and Materials Education. The skills developed by our students and our extensive industrial connections provide graduates with excellent employability in stimulating and well-paid careers.

About Queen Mary

At Queen Mary University of London, we believe that a diversity of ideas helps us achieve the previously unthinkable.

Throughout our history, we’ve fostered social justice and improved lives through academic excellence. And we continue to live and breathe this spirit today, not because it’s simply ‘the right thing to do’ but for what it helps us achieve and the intellectual brilliance it delivers.

We continue to embrace diversity of thought and opinion in everything we do, in the belief that when views collide, disciplines interact, and perspectives intersect, truly original thought takes form.

Benefits

We offer competitive salaries, access to a generous pension scheme, 30 days’ leave per annum (pro-rata for part-time/fixed-term), a season ticket loan scheme and access to a comprehensive range of personal and professional development opportunities. In addition, we offer a range of work life balance and family friendly, inclusive employment policies, flexible working arrangements, and campus facilities including an on-site nursery at the Mile End campus.
