Development and Alumni/School of Geosciences
Open ended, full time 35 hours per week
We are looking for an experienced communicator with a passion for understanding and protecting the natural world. Someone who can bring their experience of working collaboratively with colleagues and of building strong relationships, ideally income generating, to accelerate the impact of the School of Geosciences.
This role offers huge scope for a motivated person to have an impact on how the University of Edinburgh contributes to help humankind overcome global challenges such as climate change and the impact on the oceans, and therefore to themselves contribute to counteracting some of the most alarming and urgent issues we face today.
Working within the Development and Alumni department but also directly within the School, and for someone with excellent relationship building, communication, and strategic skills this senior fundraising role offers a high level of autonomy to plan, develop, and deliver fundraising activities and events for the School which are also aligned to key priorities within the University, such as the Edinburgh Earth Initiative.
The Opportunity:
This role is an excellent opportunity for an experienced relationship manager to have a direct impact on the role of the University of Edinburgh in tackling climate change and the associated environmental challenges we face. The post holder, fundraising for the School of GeoSciences, will be working on ambitious projects that seek to find sustainable and equitable solutions to the threats faced by our oceans, forests, and other key ecosystems, as well as supporting the next generation of scientists in these fields. The post holder will also have to balance these projects with work taking place across other and aligned disciplines within the school, such as population geography, urbanisation, and geopolitics; areas connecting both sciences and humanities.
The post will provide leadership and advice in the management of fundraising in the School of GeoSciences. The post holder will manage and develop an established community of committed supporters, enabling the School of GeoSciences to develop and deliver projects that can create opportunities to change lives and the wider world, with a particular focus on understanding and protecting the natural world as we know it.
The post joins a team that takes an ‘advancement’ approach to managing relationships. This means we use a strategic, integrated method of managing relationships to increase understanding and support among the University’s key constituents, including alumni and friends, government policy makers, the media, members of the community and philanthropic entities of all types.
Your skills and attributes for success:
- Experience of fundraising, high-level income-generation, or high-value stakeholder management.
- Ability to communicate excellently and to promote complex work to potential major donors / external audiences with the utmost enthusiasm, clarity and integrity.
- Stakeholder management experience including negotiation, listening and influencing skills, with a track record of developing customer / supporter / stakeholder / donor relationships
- An understanding of and belief in the importance of the natural world and the disciplines which fall within GeoSciences.
- An interest in higher education in the UK and how philanthropy can play a role in its success.
