Updated: about 1 month ago
Location: Edinburgh, SCOTLAND
Job Type: FullTime
Deadline: 05 Apr 2024

Full-time: 35 hours per week

Fixed-term: 3-year appointment, available from 1 September 2024

The Opportunity:

The Alwaleed Centre for the Study of Islam in the Contemporary World and the Edinburgh Law School at the University of Edinburgh seek to appoint a Lecturer in the field of law in the contemporary Muslim world to commence on 1st September 2024.

This three-year fixed term appointment is ideal for scholars seeking to develop their teaching and research profile. The Lecturer will contribute to the development of the Edinburgh Law School and the Alwaleed Centre’s research profiles as well as to their teaching and outreach activities. The Lecturer will undertake programme and course organisation as part of the Edinburgh Law School and Alwaleed Centre’s MSc and Honours programmes. The Lecturer will also take the lead in teaching and dissertation supervision, as well as contribute to other subject areas as appropriate. Ideally the expertise of the successful candidate will enable them to cover key aspects of Islamic/Sharia law and positive law in the contemporary Muslim world.

We particularly welcome applications from candidates with expertise in conducting comparative research across different regions of the Muslim world, or in legal pluralism, as well as Global Law. The disciplinary background of the candidates should ideally cross over between law and social and political science.

As well as a CV and cover letter, candidates are required to upload an outline (maximum 2 pages) of their research plans as part of the application process. Candidates are also asked to identify their two strongest publications (which may include work under review or accepted but not published) and explain why - in their view - these publications are both original and significant (a form is provided to facilitate the completion of this step). Candidates who are shortlisted for interview will be asked to submit what they consider to be their two strongest publications where available.

Your skills and attributes for success:

  • PhD in a relevant discipline.
  • Strong publication track record.
  • Experience teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate level.
  • Experience leading taught postgraduate programmes.
  • Experience generating impact and engaging with non-academic partners/policy makers.
  • Ability to communicate complex information clearly, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to work independently and to work effectively as part of a team.
  • A collegial approach to working with others.
