Lecturer in Digital Planning

Job Purpose

This lectureship is based in the Division of Urban Studies and Social Policy in the School of Social and Political Sciences. You will conduct research on, and deliver teaching in, digital planning including principles and practices of digital planning systems, digital planning tools (e.g. digital twins, city information modelling, virtual reality and three-dimensional city mapping) and digital planning services. The post holder will undertake research of international excellence and contribute to knowledge exchange activities relative to the discipline, contribute to learning and teaching on agreed programmes and undertake administration and service activities in line with the School/College’s strategic objectives.

Within Urban Studies and Social Policy, the post holder will be based in the Urban Analytics subject group and make key contributions to the Place and Built Environment subject group. You will be expected to make a leading contribution to the RTPI-accredited MSc City Planning and MSc City Planning and Real Estate Development as well as contribute to MSc Urban Analytics and MSc Urban Transport. You will also be expected to play a key role in growing the Subject’s PhD programme, including seeking studentships from the Scottish Graduate School of Social Science, as well as seeking funding for your own research from UKRI and other funding bodies. You will have the opportunity to join, or collaborate with, the ESRC-funded Urban Big Data Centre based in the Urban Analytics subject.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

1.      Develop and progress individual/joint research projects of international standard in the subject area with the support of a mentor, as required.

2.      Contribute fully to developing and enhancing the research profile of the School/College, including establishing a track record of high-quality publications and contributing to funding applications as an individual or team member.

3.      Contribute to the planning, organisation and delivery of teaching on undergraduate and/or postgraduate courses within the subject area in accordance with the subject’s priorities including accepting responsibilities as course co-ordinator for one or more courses.

4.      Contribute to the on-going development and design of the curriculum in a manner that supports a research-led and scholarly approach to student learning and assessment in the discipline and/or profession.

5.      Participate fully in examination and other assessment processes, as appropriate, using a variety of methods and techniques and to provide effective, timely and appropriate feedback to students to support their learning.

6.      Supervise individual student projects at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level, and to contribute to the supervision and training of postgraduate research students, as appropriate, to ensure their effective development.

7.      Take on administrative or management roles within the subject/School as assigned by the Head of School.

8.      Engage in professional development as appropriate.

9.      To contribute to the enhancement of the University’s international profile in line with the University’s Strategic Plan – World Changers Together.

Qualifications

Essential:

A1. PhD or equivalent in digital planning or a related discipline.

A2. Membership of relevant Professional Society, if appropriate.

C2. Developing track record of research outputs compatible with enhancing the School’s research profile in accordance with School objectives.

C3. Good communication skills with the ability to engage at all levels within the Subject, Division, School, College, University, and beyond, in the academic, policy and practitioner communities.

C4. Engagement with the current and future priorities of School and College strategies, aims and ambitions.

C5. Ability to lead and deliver high quality and innovative University teaching, including assessment and curriculum development.

For Appointment at Grade 8:

C6. Ability to contribute to broader leadership and management activities along with an awareness of current and future priorities of the University/College/School/Service.

C7. Established track record of research outputs and of applying for, and securing, external research funding compatible with enhancing the School’s research profile in accordance with School objectives.

Terms and Conditions

Salary will be Grade 7/8,  £39,347 -  £44,263  /£48,350 - £56,021 per annum.

This post is full time and open ended.
