An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Centre for Medical Education, providing professional academic support within our busy MBBCh curriculum team.  This is an exciting opportunity to join a vibrant team of innovative and creative academic and support staff, committed to providing our students with an outstanding experience in medical education.

Biomedical and clinical sciences are core elements of the MBBCh programme, in particular the Phase 1 years (years 1 & 2). The successful applicants will be involved in the development and delivery of teaching within this core area  alongside contributing to the wider teaching functions including curriculum development and coordination, assessment, personal tutoring and student supervision.

Applicants must hold a postgraduate degree at PhD (or equivalent) in a biomedical science subject or relevant clinical/biomedical experience. Previous experience of the design, delivery and continuous development of teaching materials in a higher education setting is desirable but not essential.

The post is based at the Heath Park site.

The majority of roles at Cardiff University are currently operating under “blended working” arrangements, with staff having the flexibility to work partly from home and partly from the University campus depending on specific business requirements. Small group sessions are conducted on site on Mondays, Tuesdays and Friday mornings, and the successful candidates will be concentrating on delivery of small group learning during the Spring semester (until May 27th 2024) on these days. Discussions around blended working arrangements for the remainder of the appointment can take place after the successful candidates have been appointed.

Salary: £39,347 to £44,263 per annum, pro-rata for hours worked (Grade 6).  Appointments to roles at Cardiff University are usually made at bottom of scale unless in exceptional circumstances.

Job Description

Main function 

To undertake research-informed medical education activities, focusing on the delivery of taught components in Phase I of the MBBCh undergraduate Medicine degree programme; with specific emphasis on the delivery of the Platform for Clinical Sciences (PCS), Case-Based Learning (CBL) Facilitation across years 1 and 2 of the course, the supervision of Student Selected Component (SSC) projects all years of the course and the development and delivery of e-Learning Resources that will enhance the student experience of Phase 1.

Main Duties and Responsibilities 

Teaching

•    To provide core academic support in the delivery and co-ordination of Case Based Learning (CBL) across Phase 1 of the MBBCh, programme.

•    To contribute to the teaching and support of the autumn-semester ‘Platform for Clinical Sciences’ module workshops, seminars, tutorials and classes.

•    To design, develop and deliver appropriate e-Learning Resources aligned to Phase I curriculum Learning Outcomes.

•    To supervise, assess and feedback on medical student selected component (SSC) literature, meta-analytical and laboratory projects. 

•    Inspire undergraduate students and give regular feedback on their performance

•    To provide pastoral care and academic support by acting as a Personal Tutor for undergraduate students in MEDIC. 

•    Carry out work associated with MBBCh Phase I assessments (i.e. the setting and marking of papers and the provision of timely and constructive feedback on students’ formative and summative assessment tasks).

•    Interview prospective medical students and/or play a role in the Medical Admissions process (following suitable training) as required.

•    Pursue excellence in research-informed teaching as a means of professional development and inspire and enable others to do the same.

•    To support the delivery of assessments across Phase 1 including writing and reviewing Single Best Answer (SBA) questions and the compilation the of end of year SBA papers. 

Scholarship

•    Contribute to scholarship and research in the area of Higher Education or own specialist area through participation in conferences, seminars and other academic and professional forums to disseminate the results of individual scholarship.

•    Engage in scholarly activity through journal articles and/or outputs that advance knowledge within the area of work.

•    Contribute to scholarship through interdisciplinary working with individuals and teams within, and external to, the wider University community.

Other

•    Engage effectively with University Health Boards, professional institutions and other academic institutions regionally and nationally to raise awareness of the School’s profile, to cultivate strategically valuable alliances, and to pursue opportunities for collaboration across a range of activities. These activities are expected to contribute to the School and the enhancement of its regional and national profile.

•    Participate in School and Programme academically-orientated administration groups, committees and activities that support the management of curricula in MEDIC (e.g. participation in Phase I Operational Group etc.)

•    Participate in School administration and activities to promote the School and its work to the wider University and the outside world.

•    Any other duties not included above, but consistent with the role.


Person Specification

Essential Criteria 

Qualifications, Education & Academic Position
1.    PhD (or equivalent) in a biomedical science subject or relevant clinical/biomedical experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience
2.    Teaching experience in the area of Medicine and/or Medical Science (or an equivalent biomedical science subject) at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level.
3.     Ability to design, deliver and continuously develop modules across the Schools teaching programmes.
4.    Evidence of developing e-Learning Resources, or similar digital education components.

Pastoral, Communication and Team Working
5.    Excellent communication and IT skills, to include the ability to present complex and conceptual basic science topics clearly and confidently to others, using high level skills and a range of media.
6.    The ability to provide appropriate oversight in regard of the academic support offered to students, by appreciating the needs of individual learners and their circumstances.
7.    Experience of successful liaison and co-working with colleagues, to ensure student needs, experiences and expectations are met.
8.    Experience of undertaking academic administrative tasks associated with academic programmes of study.
9.    Evidence of mentoring (or support) of students (or colleagues) in an academic environment.
10.  Evidence of acting as a role model for students and colleagues, showing dignity, respect, courtesy, and compassion for others.

Desirable Criteria

11.   Membership of (or evidence of current application to) the Higher Education Academy, Academy of Medical Educators (or similarly recognised professional educator body).
12.   Evidence of promoting Medicine (or biomedical science) through Public Engagement activities or projects.
13 Previous experience of the design, delivery and continuous development of teaching materials in a higher education setting
