Sitting in the Teaching and Scholarship career pathway, this post is to support the development and delivery of the new Cardiff University Education Fellowship Programmes. This AdvanceHE accredited programme will offer a suite of new CPD programmes and support activities for learning and teaching staff across the University. These will lead to Advance HE Associate Fellow, Fellow and Senior Fellowship, which we will award in-house. 

As part of the education development team within the Learning and Teaching Academy, you will develop and deliver courses from D1-D3 on the UKPSF.  

You will work in collaboration with the Education Fellowships team to embed inclusivity and accessibility, including digital accessibility, within the suite of programmes, modelling effective practices that harness and celebrate diversity. You will work with colleagues within and outside the Learning and Teaching Academy to produce guidance, resources and professional learning and development opportunities designed to support colleagues in developing inclusive and digitally accessible teaching practices. Where appropriate, you will provide specialist advice and consultancy to schools on matters relating to effective and inclusive teaching, and will lead and contribute to educational enhancement projects that aim to improve learning, teaching and the student experience.  

This is a full-time grade 7 open-ended position. Salary: £49,794-54,395 per annum.

Appointments will usually be at the bottom of the scale.

Job Description

Main Duties and Responsibilities  

Teaching    

  • Manage, lead, scope, plan and deliver on the Fellowship Programmes and to contribute to wider professional learning and development activities such as workshops and asynchronous learning and teaching resources in support of the University’s Education and Students Sub-Strategy 

  • Teach and provide supervision on programmes within the discipline area utilising appropriate, digitally accessible and inclusive teaching, learning, support and assessment methods. This will include undertaking marking, assessment and examination work and provision of timely feedback to participants.  

  • Develop a range of approaches to teaching and learning which are innovative for the University and subject area which create interest, understanding and enthusiasm amongst participants and reflect developing practice elsewhere, e.g. case studies. Gather evidence from staff and students in order to prepare reviews of academic activity. Collaborate with colleagues to identify and respond to students’ needs.  

  • Contribute to the management, planning, design, development and review of module and course content. Identifying areas for revision, improvement or innovation in order to meet diverse participant and/or industry expectations. Lead thematic priority areas within the Fellowships programmes as well as the accreditation of courses and quality management processes as necessary. 

  • Contribute to the delivery of Cardiff University’s initial and continuing professional development programmes in learning, teaching and assessment by working with the Learning and Teaching Academy team and a range of stakeholders, ensuring these courses meet demand, are current, tailored to disciplinary contexts and address key CU priorities regarding academic development. 

  • Provide guidance and coaching to colleagues, supporting their engagement with CU recognition and reward strategies for learning, teaching and assessment and informing the development and implementation of policy and practice in this area.  

  • Work closely with the other teams within the Learning and Teaching Academy to provide expert advice, guidance and consultancy for staff who teach and/or support learning in order to develop and deliver accessible (including digitally accessible), inclusive and innovative teaching and learning activities, leading and/or contributing to educational enhancement projects where appropriate. 

  • Design and develop new resources (e.g. online learning, guides and materials) for dissemination, including asynchronous support on effective and inclusive teaching. 

  • Design and deliver support to help facilitate education development in Colleges and Schools working closely with College Deans, Directors of Learning & Teaching and discipline leads within the Schools. 

  • Ensure that continuing professional development in academic development at CU  is appropriately research-informed and evidence-based. 

  • Scholarship 

  • Actively engage in individual or collaborative practice, and scholarly projects to deliver high quality peer reviewed outputs. 

  • Apply knowledge acquired though practice and scholarly work to inform curriculum development, module design and teaching delivery. 

  • Contribute to impact case studies and/or activities which contribute to the creation of impact.

    Essential Criteria

    Qualifications and Education 

  • Postgraduate degree at PhD level in a related subject area or relevant industrial experience  

  • Postgraduate Certificate in University learning and teaching or equivalent qualification or experience  

  • Knowledge, Skills and Experience 

  • An authoritative knowledge and understanding of pedagogic, academic and quality-related issues and processes in higher education.  

  • Experience in the planning and preparation of teaching and assessment of education development (e.g. postgraduate qualifications for learning and teaching in higher education etc) in response to institutional learning and teaching priorities for education and students  

  • Knowledge of the UK Professional Standards Framework for Teaching and Supporting Learning in HE 

  • A good working knowledge of current and emerging HE context, policy and practice. 

  • Extensive Higher Education teaching experience with expertise in designing inclusive and digitally accessible teaching, learning and assessment. 

  • A demonstrable commitment to student learning, diversity and inclusion and working in partnership with students to improve the student experience of learning and teaching. 

  • Relevant expertise in supporting online and blended learning and knowledge of appropriate learning design approaches and experience of working in a consultancy capacity and of supporting others through external and internal training sessions, workshops and other development activities 

  • Other 

  • Proven ability to demonstrate creativity, innovation and teamworking within work 


  • Desirable Criteria  

  • Senior Fellowship of Advance HE/HEA (or higher) 

  • Proven ability to work without close supervision 

  • Proven ability to adapt to the changing requirements of the Higher Education community 

  • Evidence of ability to participate in and develop both internal and external networks and utilise them to enhance the teaching and research activities of the department  

  • A willingness to take responsibility for related administration.

  • Engage effectively with other academic institutions etc., regionally and nationally to raise awareness of the University’s profile, to cultivate strategically valuable alliances, and to pursue opportunities for collaboration across a range of activities. These activities are expected to contribute to the LTA and the enhancement of its regional and national profile.

  • Participate in departmental administration and activities to promote the LTA and its work to the wider University and the outside world.

  • Any other duties not included above, but consistent with the role.
