Lecturer - Doctorate in Educational Psychology

The School of Psychology wishes to appoint an enthusiastic Educational Psychologist to provide professional teaching to trainee educational psychologists and contribute to all aspects of the DEdPsy Programme delivery.

Candidates will:

  • be fully qualified educational psychologists
  • have at least two years of experience of working as an educational psychologist
  • be eligible for the Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership (GBC) of the British Psychological Society (BPS)
  • be  registered as a Practitioner Psychologist with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) in the UK and
  • currently be employed as a practising educational psychologist.

The School of Psychology at Cardiff University is keen to continue to embed the educational psychology programme within the teaching and research environment in the School, alongside ensuring that the programme team influences positively the changing demands for the training and professional development of educational psychologists in Wales.
On the DEdPsy Professional Training Programme teaching covers the areas of assessment; learning; social, emotional and mental health needs; research methods, the role of the EP, and working with organisations, systems and groups. The individual appointed will be responsible for providing teaching input to trainees on one or more of these areas on the DEdPsy and within the wider School of Psychology, as well as making a teaching contribution to other aspects of the programme, organising and participating in varied curriculum events such as mini conferences and carrying out professional tutor duties, for example, supervising trainees and assessing their academic work.
The individual appointed will also take on a role as an internal and external examiner for the programme.
This is a part-time 0.4 FTE (14 hours per week) position, fixed-term until 30th June 2025, in the first instance. The position is available immediately.

Salary is paid in line with the Soulbury salary scale, with an expectation that the appointment will be between Soulbury Scale B points 1-7  £52,678 - £62,540 per annum, pro rata.

Job Description

Main Function of Post

Providing professional tuition on the DEdPsy Professional Training programme. 

The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to all aspects of the DEdPsy Professional Training Programme, including:

  • general course management, delivery and development and aspects of leadership commensurate with experience
  • delivery and development of teaching on identified theme areas
  • attending team meetings, examination boards and meetings of the Advisory Committee
  • organising and participating in the wider programme activities such as the selection process, Mini-conferences, Supervision Development Days, training events for local authority educational psychology services and other professional training programmes and professional conferences
  • giving tutorials and supervising fieldwork placements and research projects
  • assessing student performance
  • promoting the programme
  • contributing to the development of the research and publishing profile of the programme team
  • contributing to work that develops the programme’s contribution to supporting developments in Education and the profession of Educational Psychology
  • acting as Internal Examiner for Cardiff DEdPsy theses and as External Examiner for trainees in associated universities
  • contributing to other UG and PG courses where aligned with expertise and within workload capacity (e.g. the educational psychology component of an MSc module)
  • The successful candidate may occasionally be asked to perform other duties which are not included above, but which are consistent with the role, and to take on any additional, appropriate duties identified by the Head of School.

Person Specification

Essential Criteria

Expertise/Competence/Skills

1. Skills in working with others to enable the practical implementation in educational settings of theory and research in psychology, including group work and training.

2. The ability to work collaboratively within a team.

Knowledge

3. Knowledge of theory and research in educational psychology.

4. Knowledge of group processes and the theoretical basis of supervision.

5. Knowledge of The Constructionist Model of Informed, Reasoned Action (COMOIRA).

6. Knowledge of current developments and practice within the profession of Educational Psychology, particularly in the context of additional learning needs (ALN) reform and curriculum developments in Wales.

Qualifications and Professional Registration (IT/Academic/Vocational)

7. Qualified Educational Psychologist, registered as a Practitioner Psychologist with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and eligible for the Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership (GBC) of the British Psychological Society (BPS).

Experience

8. Generic EP experience, with the entire age range of children and young people, and of working at individual, group and systemic levels within schools and other organisations with experience of supervising EPs or trainee EPs.

Specific Qualities (e.g. attitudes)

9. Interest in personal and professional development, including conducting research in applied psychology.

10. Willingness to engage in the administration and leadership of the programme, working alongside other members of the team.

Desirable Criteria
1. Completed or on-going doctoral level studies.
2. Ability to communicate through the medium of Welsh and experience of practising as an educational psychologist in a Welsh context.
3. Expertise in research methods and statistics for educational psychologists.
4. Understanding and experience of current developments to the education systems in England and Wales.
5. Membership of the BPS.
6. Contribution to training on doctoral level educational psychology programmes.
7. Willingness to contribute to the teaching across the wider psychology department.
