As a global leader in its field The Department of Bioengineering is a fast-paced multi-disciplinary department, a meeting of scientific and engineering specialisms combine to focus on Medical applications with a scientific and engineering approach.

The role

We are looking for an enthusiastic individual to join the Department of Bioengineering’s multidisciplined technical team in support of our wet laboratory teaching labs.

Reporting to the Teaching Technician and working as part of a wider multidisciplined technical team, you will help manage and run our teaching laboratories and classes. Your role will be pivotal in supporting undergraduates by providing essential laboratory support for the teaching and outreach programmes. At times the post holder may also assist the wider technical team in support of core facilities and research laboratories.


Duties and responsibilities

What will you be doing?

Based within our teaching laboratory you will be supporting a range of teaching modules, with the opportunity to expand your knowledge of teaching / research techniques and contribute to the smooth running of teaching laboratories and classes. Duties will include equipment setup / maintenance, preparing experimental material and solutions, decontamination of the labs, glassware washing / preparation, health and safety support, and waste management for teaching / research purposes.


Essential requirements

You should apply if...

You have a degree in a relevant Bioscience subject or equivalent laboratory apprenticeship, vocational qualifications and/or experience, preferably in a relevant technical or scientific role. Preferably you should have experience of working in a laboratory environment, in the biosciences and with chemical and biological reagents and material. You will also have an enthusiasm for scientific teaching and research, and a desire to provide high quality technical support for teaching / research purposes.

Due to the nature of the job, flexible working hours are required at times e.g. early starts / late finishes, during busy teaching periods. You should also demonstrate organisational and administrative skills, be efficient and adaptable and used to working in a busy dynamic laboratory environment. The ability to work well as part of a team, prioritise effectively and work to meet the teaching deadlines is essential.

To note that there will be an element of manual handling: The regular movement of equipment and consumables and as needed the use of lifting aids for deliveries and other heavier loads. PPE and training would be provided before any such work is started.
