Job Summary
The Department of Life Sciences has seven teaching laboratories in two buildings providing practical classes for over 1000 undergraduate students on two degree streams and 2 Masters courses.
The post has three main purposes. To:
- To provide support for the day-to-day management of Life Sciences teaching laboratories and associated space used for teaching for one of the degree streams.
- Provide direct line management to junior technical teaching team staff.
- Plan and develop delivery of existing and new laboratory practical classes with the Teaching Laboratory Manager and other relevant staff.
Duties and Responsibilities
These include:
- Work closely with the Teaching Laboratory Manager and other teaching staff to deliver a proactive approach to the technical support for one of the Life Sciences degree streams and to enhance the skills base of the team to provide a further contribution to the first-class teaching of Life Sciences at Imperial.
- Identify wider training and development opportunities for junior technical staff.
- To be responsible for potential new equipment and suppliers for an up-to-date, excellent laboratory experience for students.
- Assist the Teaching Laboratory Manager and others, as appropriate, to develop a strategic plan for the delivery of technical services and support for Life Sciences related practical classes across faculties and the college outreach programmes as required.
- Work closely with technical staff in the testing and optimising of each practical and identify, provide or source training where necessary.
Essential requirements
These include:
- Educated to degree level in Life Sciences or a related subject.
- Experience of practical undergraduate teaching in Life Sciences or related subject in an HE environment.
- Experience of managing a team.
- Experience of laboratories and equipment management.
- Experience of developing new methods and procedures
- Experience of training of staff and students.
- Managing waste streams.
- Experience of managing Health & Safety within laboratories.
