About the role
The East Asia Section of the Bodleian Libraries is offering an exciting opportunity for a self-motivated, creative and visionary individual to work as the Japanese Studies Librarian, supporting world class research and teaching in Japanese Studies for Social Sciences and the Humanities.
You will have day-to-day oversight of the Bodleian Japanese Library, one of the principal collections on Japan in the UK, in liaison with the Head of the East Asia Section and you will line-manage a small team in delivery of high-quality frontline services to the University and external readers.
But that's not all. You will also liaise with and provide research support (provision of advice, assistance and training) for the Faculty of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies and the School of Global and Area Studies, promote information and digital literacies, and develop, manage and interpret the Library’s Japanese Studies collections.
And let's not forget about strategic development. As one of the Team Leaders in the East Asia Section, you will initiate and implement ongoing strategic development of the services and collections in the East Asia Section, including information and digital literacies, open access scholarship, review of lending policies, staff training and development, as well as other areas of strategic importance.
This is a permanent, full-time post, working 37.5 hours per week.
Are you ready to embark on this extraordinary journey with us? Don’t delay, apply today!
About You
You will have excellent knowledge of Japanese language (written and spoken) and literature, ability to read classical Japanese, significant experience of print and electronic resources for the academic study of Japanese, with genuine enthusiasm for the discipline and ideally knowledge of one or more other East Asian languages (e.g. Korean or Chinese).
You will be an excellent team player and expected to work constructively and flexibly in various teams, principally in East Asia Team, Asian and Middle Eastern Collections Subject Management Group, the Humanities Subject Consultants Group as well as with subject specialists and staff in other Bodleian Libraries, including the relevant technical services supervisor(s) and reader services supervisor(s).
You will communicate effectively in written and spoken English to a wide range of staff, users, external stakeholders, and general audiences.
