International Partnerships Engagement Manager

The International Office of Cardiff University is recruiting!



This is an exciting opportunity to work in a highly motivated, dynamic, strategically focused International Partnerships Team.  We're looking for an International Partnerships Engagement Manager to play a key role in delivering our international partnerships strategy to develop and manage engagement with international academic partners in key regions of the world.

The post holder will manage designated Strategic / Priority / Civic Mission / university wide partners, and related due diligence processes, and develop and deliver engagement activities with global partners to increase research and education impact, enrich staff and student experience, and help enhance our global reputation.

As part of the Communications and Marketing Department, the post-holder will support the University’s international partnerships strategy, raising the profile of Cardiff University’s work, promoting our ambitions and achievements and demonstrating the impact and value of our research, teaching and learning.

The successful candidate must demonstrate a high level of initiative and adaptability, including flexibility regarding working hours and a willingness to travel internationally for up to 12 weeks a year.

This post is full-time and open ended.

Salary: £44,737 - £51,805 per annum (Grade 7)

Job Description

Key Duties

  • Manage designated strategic, priority, civic and University-wide international partnerships for Cardiff University, including undertaking and managing the necessary due diligence and formal approval mechanisms and agreements, working closely with the PVC International and the Deans for International, in line with the University’s international partnership strategy
  • Develop and deliver engagement activities with global partners to increase research and education impact, enrich staff and student experience, and help enhance our global reputation
  • Devise, deliver and report on operational, engagement and communication plans to ensure key partnerships remain active and aligned with university priorities and goals
  • Devise appropriate due diligence frameworks for all international strategic partnership activity at Cardiff University
  • Manage designated partnership regions, developing partnership strategies and plans, linking with key institutions and stakeholders
  • Deploy professional customer relationship management principles and practices to support relationships with international partners, including contract negotiation, as required
  • Build successful relationships internally with Cardiff University Colleges, Schools, Research Institutes/Centres and Departments/Directorates,
  • Build successful relationships externally with organisations such as the Welsh Government / Universities Wales, UK Government Departments, Embassies, British Council etc.
  • Manage high-level delegations and visits to and from the University with inter-cultural sensitivity and experience of cross-cultural communications 
  • Represent the University in a wide range of fora, both in the UK and internationally.
  • Contribute to the long-term strategic planning of the International Partnerships Team, and represent the team on relevant internal committees / meetings and at global partner institutions, events and conferences
  • Take responsibility for resolving issues independently within the international partnerships remit where they fall within set role objectives, using judgement and creativity to suggest the most appropriate course of action and ensuring complex and conceptual issues and solutions are understood by the audience
  • Plan and deliver projects that have impact across the international partnerships remit, managing the operation of project teams as needed, planning, organising and delegating work, monitoring progress and intervening as required
  • Investigate and analysis specific issues within international partnerships creating recommendation reports, supported by advances within the international partnerships remit
  • Ensure that the provision of International Partnerships is delivered to the institution, proactively changing the delivery according to customer requirements, contributing to the development of institution wide standards within global partnership development and management
  • Create specific working groups from colleagues across the University to achieve international partnership `objectives
  • Any other duties commensurate with the grade and role as requested by the Head of International Partnerships

Essential Criteria

Qualifications and Education

  • Degree/Professional qualification/NVQ 5 or equivalent experience
  • Knowledge, Skills and Experience
  • Substantial experience of working within international partnerships in an academic context, including a demonstrable track record in initiating, developing and managing global partnerships which benefit all partners
  • Able to demonstrate expert professional knowledge within international higher education partnerships to be recognised as an authority in the field
  • Experience of managing budgets
  • Customer Service, Communication and Team Working
  • Ability to influence multiple stakeholders, both internal and external within the area of International higher education partnerships engagement that have a strategic impact
  • Ability to communicate both orally and in writing detailed and complex information effectively and professionally with a wide range of individuals at all levels within the organisation and externally with demonstrable diplomacy, cultural awareness and sensitivity
  • Proven ability to develop internal and external networks in order to contribute to long term developments and deliver strategic outcomes and sustainable benefits, including supporting effective engagement with global partners, academic staff and external organisations
  • Evidence of ability to explore partners’ needs, adapt the service, and set partner expectations
  • Planning, Analysis and Problem solving
  • Evidence of ability to research and solve expansive problems using initiative and creativity; identify and propose both practical and innovative solutions within all aspects of international partnerships
  • 10. Evidence of demonstrable knowledge of key advances within International and European partnerships.
