The Centre for Medical Education is looking to recruit a Lecturer in Medical Education to join our team of educationalists delivering postgraduate Certificate, Diploma and Masters qualifications in medical education.  The main purpose of the role is to deliver and develop high-quality research-led teaching in medical education. To pursue excellence in teaching and learning and to inspire others to do the same. You will make a significant contribution to our growing e-learning profile and is an exciting opportunity to make a significant contribution to our medical education portfolio. 

You will join an experienced and dynamic team of educationalists, providing leadership in teaching, scholarship and CPD in healthcare education. We also provide a wide range of continuing professional development activities designed to meet the needs of a clinical workforce across a range of healthcare settings. Our research profile includes investigations across postgraduate and continuing education. 

We are looking for an experienced medical educator with substantial teaching experience. You should have demonstrated success in implementing teaching innovations with a growing international reputation for teaching excellence.

Salary: £43,434 to £50,296 per annum (Grade 7), but please note that it is anticipated the maximum starting salary for this post will be £43,434 per annum

Job Description

Main function

Deliver teaching in Medical Education, including the development, delivery and evaluation of programmes within undergraduate and postgraduate Medical Education provision within the School.  To supervise students and to carry out administrative duties within the work area as required. To pursue excellence in teaching and learning and inspire others to do the same. To make a significant contribution to our medical education portfolio, including the delivery of quality, evidence-based Bachelors, Postgraduate Certificates, Diplomas and Masters qualifications in Medical Education. 

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Teaching
•    Independently contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate medical education module and curriculum development and lead modules, inspiring students
•    Supervise the work of undergraduate and postgraduate medical education students including dissertations and to be able to co-supervise PGR students and act as a PGT progress review panel member as required
•    Manage projects relating to own area of work
•    Supply pastoral care through both acting as a Personal Tutor and providing support and guidance to postgraduate medical education students, building and establishing trust
•    To contribute to scholarship through interdisciplinary working with individuals and teams within, and external to, the wider university community

Scholarship
•    Contribute to scholarship in the area of work through participation in conferences, seminars and other academic and professional forums to disseminate the results of individual scholarship
•    Engage in scholarly activity through journal articles and/or outputs which advance knowledge within the area of work
•    Contribute to scholarship through interdisciplinary working with individuals and teams within, and external to, the wider university community
•    Carry out other forms of scholarship including work associated with examinations (setting and marking papers and providing constructive feedback to students) , administration and participation in committee work

Other
•    Engage effectively with industrial, commercial and public sector organisations, professional institutions, other academic institutions etc., regionally and nationally to raise awareness of the School’s profile, to cultivate strategically valuable alliances, and to pursue opportunities for collaboration across a range of activities. These activities are expected to contribute to the School and the enhancement of its regional and national profile
•    Participate in School administration and activities to promote the School and its work to the wider University and the outside world
•    Any other duties not included above, but consistent with the role


Person Specification

Essential Criteria

Qualifications and Education
1.    Postgraduate degree at PhD or Masters level in Education or related social science subject or relevant industrial expertise
2.    Postgraduate Teaching and Learning qualification or equivalent qualification or experience

Knowledge, Skills and Experience
3.    Significant teaching experience at a high level of quality at undergraduate or postgraduate level in the field of learning and teaching and evidence of successful supervision of Masters students within a cognate discipline
4.    Growing national reputation within academic field of learning and teaching and evidence of research within higher education in the field of learning and teaching
5.    Ability to design, deliver and continuously develop modules across the Schools Medical Education teaching provision

Pastoral, Communication and Team Working
6.    Excellent communication skills with the ability to present complex and conceptual ideas clearly and confidently to others using high level skills and a range of media, in particular e-learning
7.    The ability to provide appropriate pastoral support to students, appreciate the needs of individual students and their circumstances and to act as a personal tutor
8.    Ability to act as module leader and coordinate with others to ensure student needs and expectations are met
9.    Proven ability to demonstrate creativity, innovation and teamworking within work

Desirable Criteria 

1.    Knowledge of healthcare education within the NHS
2.    Proven ability to adapt to the changing requirements of the Higher Education community
3.    Evidence of ability to participate in and develop both internal and external networks and utilise them to enhance the teaching and research activities of the School
