About the opportunity

Operating from within the new School of Humanities and a key stakeholder of new Vere Gordon Childe Centre, the Director, AAIA is responsible for:

  • Leading, managing and delivering a coherent and focused research strategy
  • Building a collaborative environment that effectively engages members of the academic community across the Institution and beyond
  • Facilitating and promoting external engagement of its activities; contributes to related disciplinary research and teaching strategy and delivery
  • Maintaining alignment with Faculty objectives, University policies and external standards.

The Director leads the AAIA's research, impact and outreach and engagement strategy, its performance outcomes, and its workplace culture. It contributes to the School and Faculty leadership team's strategies and operational plans and is responsible for implementing these. They will supervise current AAIA staff, mentor related academic staff and contribute to development and management processes and practice in compliance with University systems, practices, and processes.

This position complies with and supports the financial strategy and objectives for the Faculty. The Director demonstrates and enables the values of the University in relation to its people and culture and provides a safe working environment for all staff and students.

About you

The successful candidate will:

  • Be a scholar of high international standing within the disciplines of archaeology and/or Classics and Ancient History, with a portfolio of outputs and record of research grant funding that reflects that standing. You will have significant experience of academic leadership through e.g. building research teams, leading international fieldwork or related projects, and/or within institutional settings, and be able to demonstrate the impact of your work.
  • Develop strategies to encourage further development of research, by developing funding through established schemes and significant events, showcasing current research and encouraging future research collaborations for the AAIA.
  • Provide leadership in their academic field of endeavour, working with relevant discipline leads, Heads of School and Associate Deans as required to ensure that AAIA activities are aligned with and support discipline, School and Faculty research and teaching strategies.
  • Work closely with related disciplines, School, Faculty and the Office of Global Engagement in implementing external engagement strategies.
  • Be responsible for overseeing compliance with the Faculty/School budget, financial management plan, systems, processes, and practices for the AAIA.
  • Be responsible for ensuring consistency of processes and practices usage and application.
  • Provide leadership through mentoring and nurturing of talent and ensuring that staff development opportunities for both professional and academic staff are part of the AAIA's culture.

Term and remuneration

The successful candidate will be offered an attractive remuneration package commensurate with the responsibilities of the position and the candidate's relevant experience and qualifications. Salary sacrificing options are also available under the University's Flexible Remuneration Packaging Scheme. Provision is also made for limited private consulting in accordance with the University's regulations.

A range of superannuation options will be available to the successful candidate. By law, the University is required to make employer superannuation contributions equivalent to 10% of salary (called 'Superannuation Guarantee' contributions).

The successful candidate may elect to have Superannuation Guarantee contributions made to a complying fund of their choice, or to have a higher level of contributions (currently 17% of salary) made to 'UniSuper'. The components of the successful candidate's remuneration package will reflect their choice of superannuation arrangements.

Visa sponsorship and relocation assistance will also be provided if required.
