Job summary

The Catering and Events Department at Imperial College London operates various cafés and restaurants located across all London Campuses and predominantly within the South Kensington, Hammersmith, and White City Campuses. The department aims to provide affordable and high-quality food and services for the Imperial College community - https://www.imperial.ac.uk/events-and-hospitality/catering/

Are you passionate about food development and following food trends?  If so, we are seeking an experienced Senior Chef who will primarily be based at our main campus in South Kensington. The role will be to support the Executive Chef in developing and executing new food concepts, re-branding and remobilisation of new outlets; and produce consistently high quality and inspiring food within gross profit percentages.


Duties and responsibilities

The successful candidate will assist the Executive Chef to plan and co-ordinate the kitchen team to ensure the provision of an effective and efficient service and cover other Senior Chef’s areas in their absence. You will be required to conduct duties of the role in accordance with health and hygiene legislation and Departmental/College procedures and assist with developing members of the kitchen team.

The post holder will support the Executive Chef in the development of culinary initiatives that contribute to the growth and overall strategic management and leadership of the entirety of creative cuisine delivered across all Imperial College Campuses’ including the development of food offers in White City.

The portfolio currently encompasses three restaurants serving over 1000 meals prepared on site daily, 18 cafes and outlets, an a la carte restaurant and two fine dining venues. This also includes all catering for internal events, the provision of all event catering for external commercial events, one bar serving food and the food provision for contracted services to the Royal College of Music. The Catering outlet sales budget totals over £9.1million with an associated food and beverage cost of sales of c£5million whilst events operate at nil subsidy to cover all costs with a budget of £3.5 million.


Essential requirements



    • Previous experience of working within the Catering industry, catering / kitchen management, in a high volume and multi-site environment

    • Work experience in a position such as Head Chef, Development Chef and/or Group Chef

    • Proven successful leadership experience

    • A demonstrated creative approach to developing a catering service, specifically in accordance with new food concepts, seasonal and food trends

    • A complete understanding of the importance of health and safety at work and associated regulations / legislation requirements

    • Tact and diplomacy to deal with people in all circumstances

    • Ability to work effectively, independently and as part of a team

    • Excellent communication and organisational skills

    • Excellent time management, organisational and planning skills, to deal with a range of operational matters within given deadlines


    You will ideally be comfortable with giving training and possess qualities of a leader.
