Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTPs) are government-funded collaborations between universities and businesses. In KTPs, academics and company representatives jointly supervise a KTP Associate who is based in the company, with the goal of improving their competitiveness and productivity. KTPs serve to make better use of the knowledge, technology and skills generated by universities, colleges and research organisations.

THE PROJECT

The University of Essex, in partnership with Ecliptic and in collaboration with leading academics from the Department of Mathematical Sciences, offers an exciting opportunity for a technical person to work in a project that aims to develop insight, prediction and recommendation functionalities within Ecliptic’s expert, vendor and contract management platform, Gemini, using the latest techniques in artificial intelligence and machine learning.

This post is fixed term for 28 months and is based at Ecliptic’s Chelmsford office. 

DUTIES OF THE POST

The duties of the post will include:

  • Working with the Product Development Team at Ecliptic to contribute to the product roadmap for Gemini
  • Identifying opportunities for embedding AI and Analytics models to increase the value and revenue generation of Gemini
  • Design & develop approved tools and algorithms within Gemini
  • Assisting in the promotion and demonstration of these tools and algorithms to the Ecliptic client base in London and beyond.
  • Building an expert-matching system for insurance claims based on machine learning techniques such as generalised linear models, generalised additive models and credibility theory models, Bayesian models, support vector machines and neural networks.
  • Developing an AI-invoice validation system that uses both in-house and external data.
  • Developing an AI-driven actuarial and financial reserving support tool providing insights into previous similar cases, expert costs, life cycle and financial outcomes.
  • Publish peer-reviewed articles in High Impact Journals in collaboration with academics at the University of Essex

KEY REQUIREMENTS

The post holder must have:

  • BSc in Data Science, Statistics, Computer Science, Actuarial Science, Mathematics or related discipline
  • A higher degree, such as MSc and/or PhD, in Data Science, Statistics, Computer Science, Actuarial Science or a similar field, or equivalent industry experience
  • Experience of handling large and complex datasets and fusing disparate data streams using e.g. APIs
  • Skilled in higher level programming languages such as R and Python
  • Practical and theoretical knowledge of computational intelligence / machine learning algorithms for predictive modelling and forecasting
  • Practical and theoretical knowledge of mathematical and stochastic optimisation approaches such as evolutionary algorithms, probabilistic stochastic models specifically Markov decision processes and reinforcement learning algorithms
  • Processing and aggregation of heterogeneous data streams based on structured and unstructured data
  • Ability to write technical reports/papers
  • Ability to interface with people with commercial interests and from varied technical backgrounds

Note: It is anticipated that the KTP Associate will spend significant time at Ecliptic's London offices, and once launched, at the London Innovation Lab. Regular travel to London has therefore been accounted for in the Travel & Subsistence budget.
