THE PROJECT

The University of Essex in partnership with Newcross Healthcare Solutions Ltd offers an exciting opportunity to use novel techniques in machine learning and game theory to develop an automated and intelligent staff-shift matching system to be deployed on Newcross' HealthforceGo app , enabling better fulfilment of the shifts offered by our care provider partners. This KTP project will be recruiting two Associates, and the successful candidate for this position will work alongside a Data Scientist (Algorithm Engineer ) to deliver the project. The Associates will be joining a team of 4 Developers, set within a broader Engineering and Product team of 30+.

It is anticipated that both Associates will need to develop some level of familiarity with the other's work in order to develop a cohesive and optimised system. They will be supervised and advised on the academic side by Dr David Richerby, Dr Maria Kyropoulou, Dr Panagiotis Kanellopoulos and Prof. Luca Citi.

This post is fixed term for 30 months and is based at Newcross Healthcare Solutions Ltd offices in London.

DUTIES OF THE POST

The duties of the post will include:

  • Liaising with professional services in the healthcare industry to understand the business requirements and rationale of the programme of work.
  • Understanding the wider strategy behind the project and how it will impact on the company.
  • Lead on delivery of the project work plan, ensuring knowledge and capability is embedded within the company.
  • Managing a complex project with multiple stakeholders, monitoring and reporting on progress and ensuring objectives are met.
  • Building and analysing predictive models to represent real life settings, e.g., to model healthcare experts' preferences with respect to the scheduling of shifts.
  • Contribute to the design of scheduling methods, for example by using machine learning techniques to design domain-specific heuristics for the scheduling algorithm.
  • Design and evaluation of machine learning algorithms.
  • Contribute to the down-streaming and adoption of new technology within Newcross.

REQUIREMENTS

  • BSc in Operational Research, Mathematics, Computer Science, Electronic Engineering, Biomedical Engineering or a related discipline
  • A higher degree in Operational Research, Mathematics, Computer Science, Electronic Engineering, Biomedical Engineering or a related discipline or equivalent qualification, or equivalent industry experience
  • Excellent knowledge of data science and machine learning methods
  • Excellent programming skills in Python (Object-Oriented Programming), with a good understanding of coding practices
  • Experience in frameworks like Numpy, SciPy, Pandas, SciKit-Learn and TensorFlow / PyTorch.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to write technical reports/papers
