THE PROJECT

The University of Essex in partnership with Newcross Healthcare Ltd offers an exciting opportunity to use novel techniques in machine learning and game theory to develop an automated and intelligent staff-shift matching system to be deployed on Newcross' HealthforceGo app , enabling better fulfilment of the shifts offered by our care provider partners. This is a rare opportunity to join a company in the healthcare sector, which is going through a technical transformation which will see our applications scaling to a level that will allow millions of healthcare workers to benefit from the use of our system. This KTP project will be recruiting two Associates, and the successful candidate for this position will work alongside a Data Scientist (Machine Learning Engineer) to deliver the project. The Associates will be joining a team of 4 Developers, set within a broader Engineering and Product team of 30+.

It is anticipated that both Associates will need to develop some level of familiarity with the other's work in order to develop a cohesive and optimised system. They will be supervised and advised on the academic side by Dr David Richerby, Dr Maria Kyropoulou, Dr Panagiotis Kanellopoulos and Prof. Luca Citi.

This post is fixed term for 30 months and is based at Newcross Healthcare Ltd offices in London.

DUTIES OF THE POST

The duties of the post will include:

  • Liaising with professional services in the healthcare industry to understand the business requirements and rationale of the programme of work.
  • Understanding the wider strategy behind the project and how it will impact on the company.
  • Lead on delivery of the project work plan, ensuring knowledge and capability is embedded within the company.
  • Acting as the algorithm-design expert to technical and non-technical employees.
  • Transferring knowledge around algorithm design to other Newcross employees.
  • Building mathematical models to represent real life settings and analysing them, e.g. using game theory.
  • Design and analysis of scheduling methods (also taking into account the stakeholders’ preferences).
  • Design and evaluation of optimisation algorithms.
  • Contribute to the down-streaming and adoption of new technology within Newcross.

REQUIREMENTS

  • BSc in Operational Research, Mathematics, Computer Science, Economics or a related discipline.
  • A higher degree in Operational Research, Mathematics, Computer Science, Economics or a related discipline or equivalent qualification, or equivalent industry experience.
  • Excellent programming skills in Python (Object-Oriented Programming), with a good understanding of coding practices and version control software such as Git.
  • Research and innovation skills with the ability to understand publications on algorithmic topics and explain them to others, alongside evaluating and adapting / improving the ideas discussed.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Good theoretical and applied knowledge in combinatorial optimisation.
