The Post

Reporting to the Environment Advisor within the Safety, Environment and Continuity team the Active Travel Officer will take a lead role in the promotion, development and embedding of sustainable transport across the University. Your work will involve close liaison with staff at all levels in academic and professional service areas to ensure that the activities managed within these areas are properly integrated with the University's corporate approach and ambition. A key component of the role will be to work with staff and student groups in particular the University of Stirling Students Union, the Student Union’s Environmental team and the University Sports Development team. You will be responsible for developing and maintaining working relationships with internal and external stakeholders to encourage behaviour change when it comes to Active Travel.


Description of Duties

  • Assist in meeting the green travel targets set out in the University of Stirling’s Sustainability Plan
  • Lead on the preparation, development and delivery of active travel proposals on campus to support behavioural change
  • Lead on the design, planning, implementation and evaluation of active travel project(s) and activities which reflect key priorities and feedback from stakeholder engagement
  • Establish and/or develop and maintain appropriate communication channel(s) relevant to sustainable transport development projects
  • Gather and analyse data relating to sustainable transport activity. This would include conducting transport surveys to identify current commuting trends, barriers and identifying opportunities for increasing staff and student participation in active travel. You will prepare and present relevant information and recommendations to colleagues, stakeholders and sponsors (This will include collecting, managing and updating active travel data so trends can be easily identified and displayed in excel)
  • Support the preparation, development and delivery of cycling initiatives on campus and progress towards/maintain Cycle Friendly Status Develop and maintain effective partnerships which support the University and Student’s Unions efforts to make cycling, walking and utilising public transport an attractive travel choice, linking in with wider programmes, initiatives and events
  • Organise and host active travel events/campaigns. This can include organising regular led walks and cycles, liaising with stakeholders to host bike/ebike maintenance sessions, holding step count challenges and promotional events for current bike sharing schemes (Nextbike)
  • Assist students and staff with future funding bids/opportunities and the delivery of active travel initiatives
  • Provide support and advice on active travel technologies such as route mapping software and phone apps
  • Offer support to staff who wish to participate in the University of Stirling Cycle scheme
  • Identify and lead in applying to/securing active transport funding when and where appropriate
  • Research and propose new initiatives to advance active travel


Essential Criteria

  • Previous experience in working in Active Travel with a passion and knowledge of cycling, walking and all forms of active travel
  • Enthusiastic individual who is committed to promoting the benefits of active transport as a healthy, sustainable and affordable travel option
  • Experience of organising and running events/campaigns with good communication skills and the ability to engage with varied audiences is essential
  • Experience of stakeholder engagement, influencing senior managers and peers in behavioural change and implementing change in complex organisations
  • Social media and app knowledge
  • Proficient in ICT skills including Word, Excel and Outlook
  • Good organisational skills, precision and attention to detail
  • Ability to prioritise multiple tasks and meet deadlines
  • Able to manage own workload and contribute to team objectives
  • Ability to set appropriate targets and measure progress. This includes undertaking gap analysis to identify campus improvements and verify key priorities by engaging with staff and students
  • Good written skills including the ability to produce written reports
  • Ability to motivate and influence others
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work well as part of a team and on own initiative

  • Knowledge of active travel, environmental, health and sustainability programmes and initiatives in Scotland
  • Experience of managing projects and budgets
  • Experience of workshop and event planning and delivery
  • Experience of creating action plans and developing strategies
  • Experience of engaging and managing stakeholders
  • Knowledge of bike mechanics
  • Hold a current driving licence
