The Department of Physics has a record of outstanding research across particle physics, theoretical physics, nanotechnologies and ultra-low temperature physics, and has recently initiated a new research group in Astronomy.  Research within the Physics Department is supported by GRID computing facilities, the SuperFab nanofabrication facility, the London Low Temperature Laboratory and the John Adams Institute (JAI) for Accelerator Science, with collaborations at CERN, LIGO, SNOLAB, SURF, LNGS, J-PARC, CLIC, KEK, ESS and the Diamond Light Source, and in the SEPnet and the NExT Institute for Particle Phenomenology research networks. The JAI is part of our Centre for Particle Physics and Astronomy, which includes research in dark matter searches, neutrino physics, particle theory, LHC experiments including ATLAS and FASER, and astronomy activities include analysis of gravitational waves, supernovae and involvement in the Euclid Mission.

The John Adams Institute for Accelerator Science is a centre of excellence in the UK for advanced and novel accelerator technology. The Institute provides expertise and training in accelerator techniques, participates in research and development, and promotes advanced accelerator applications in science and society at large. Royal Holloway University of London is a founding member of the JAI, in partnership with the University of Oxford and Imperial College London. Our Accelerator Group has developed advanced beam instrumentation for international accelerators, including the high-luminosity upgrade of the Large Hadron Collider at CERN, and has developed the Beam Delivery Simulation (BDSIM) software that is being applied to design future colliders, beamlines for physics beyond collider experiments, and medical accelerators for hadron beam therapy.

We are seeking to appoint an academic working in the research areas of accelerator physics and/or medical physics involving accelerators. We welcome applicants that strengthen or complement our activities in the HL-LHC, Future Circular Colliders, Muon Collider, or Physics Beyond Colliders programme and/or Medical Accelerators. Applicants with research expertise and interest in particle tracking development,  accelerator instrumentation, or complementary areas are encouraged to apply. This appointment is open to all levels of academic roles: Lecturer, Senior Lecturer, Reader, Professor. Applicants should have a strong record of producing high quality publications and attracting significant research funding. Applicants should have a track record of excellence in delivering undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and the supervision of both undergraduate and postgraduate students. The post holder will be expected to contribute strongly to the development of research impact, and the successful applicant will have, or have the potential to have, a strong track record in this area.

The Department of Physics is committed to delivering excellent teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. Students on our IoP accredited degrees undertake research projects embedded in our 100% world-leading and internationally excellent research environment (as described in REF21).

The Department plays an active part in inter-disciplinary activities and benefits from a number of University led initiatives including the ‘Transformative Digital Technologies, Security and Society’, ‘Advanced Quantum Science and Technologies’ and ‘Living Sustainably’ research catalysts and the School will be leading the establishment of a new Centre of Applied AI and Skills.   In addition to the opportunities with the Department of Physics, the post holder(s) will have the opportunity to play a full role in the growth of Applied AI within the School, and across the University more generally, with the opportunity to collaborate in development of new MSc programmes in this area.

The Department of Physics is committed to reducing gender inequality, as recognised by the award of Athena SWAN silver status and the renewal of Physics Juno Champion status in 2022, and strongly welcome applications from groups under-represented in academic posts.
