This Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) project aims to develop a novel in-vehicle (mobile) monitoring solution, to capture and analyse road conditions and road infrastructure, using advanced artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML).

The project will develop a novel in-vehicle mobile urban monitoring system (MUMS). The problem which the project will address is in direct response to client-driven demand for mobile solutions to more effectively, pro-actively maintain road condition and traffic/infrastructure.

The project is strategic for Smart Transport Hub (STH) to develop novel data technology solutions for the transport market to meet challenges. STH has already developed a static transport/traffic data analysis solution, but is seeking to extend their capabilities to develop a sophisticated mobile solution capable of delivering real-time data analysis.

Candidate Profile: minimum MSc in Data Science or a related discipline, with some relevant industry experience.

Skills/ experience required include:

  • Expertise in data analytics, particular in Machine Learning and Computer Vision
  • Ability to demonstrate numerical and machine learning software skills in e.g. MATLAB, Python
  • Experience of supervised and unsupervised machine learning techniques
  • Experience in simulation technology
  • Ability to innovate and initiate work in a practical environment
  • A track record of publications in deep learning algorithms 
  • Additional experience of working in the logistics, transport and infrastructure-related field would be a distinct advantage

Main responsibilities: 

  • Developing sophisticated ML algorithms for machine vision
  • Extending the most recent research in depth estimation from single camera to multi-camera set-ups
  • Improving methods for stat-of-the-art depth estimation
  • Integration of developed algorithms with STH’s existing software platform and client dashboards
  • Developing data technology solutions that are not only novel, but meet existing market challenges

  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work independently.
  • Analytical thinking, problem solving and proactivity.
  • Ability to engage with customers and distributors.
  • Leadership and maturity to deliver the KTP project and ensure it achieves agreed milestones and objectives. 
  • Project management skills and experience would be an advantage.

Aston University: You will work in a project team with Dr Maria Chli and Dr Luis Manso at Aston University, the Senior Management Team at STH, along with the support of the IUK’s Knowledge Transfer Adviser.  

Location: You will be based predominantly at STH office in London. You will also have access to facilities at Aston University in central Birmingham, and some travel to trainings and key clients may also be required.
