Student assistant in record linkage and geocoding in large-scale Chinese datasets

The chair of applied economics headed by Prof. Dr. Peter Egger pursues research mainly in the areas of applied international and public economics and in applied econometrics.


Job description

The research assistant will provide support mainly on the following tasks:

  •  record linkage using simple NLP techniques in large-scale Chinese databases (million scale), 
  • managing SQL database and support the team with SQL-to-Python export,
  • geocoding Chinese addresses with Gaode API and visualization of firm locations using a GIS software, preferably ArcGIS.
  • The project team have already developed codebases for these two tasks. The RA is expected to run the scripts, evaluate the output, document the pipeline as well as assist paper writing. 


    Your profile
    • Master student from ETH/Uni. Ideally, in the field of computational linguistics, computer science, data science, GIS.
    • You can start ASAP and stay with the team for at least 6 months and ideally 12 months. 

    Skill set:

  • Chinese knowledge. The addresses and the map API are in Chinese.
  • SQL (MySQL).
  • Python.
  • Big data analytics.
  • GIS software (plus).
  • You can work 20% during the semester and full time during the semester break.
