Staff scientist expert in cryo-EM within the School of Life Sciences, EPFL Lausanne

Your mission :

Join our dynamic team at the School of Life Sciences as we intensify our focus on structural biology. We are currently seeking a cryo-EM specialist with expertise in either single particle cryo-EM or cellular tomography.

This unique position will be jointly held between the Protein Production and Structure Core Facility (SV-PTPSP, https://www.epfl.ch/research/facilities/ptpsp/ ) at the Life Sciences School, and the laboratory of Nicolas Thomä (https://www.epfl.ch/labs/upthomae/ ). SV-PTPSP offers comprehensive support to both local and external scientific communities, specializing in the production, purification, and structural characterization of biologically significant macromolecules. Meanwhile, the Thomä lab dissects the workings of macromolecular machines in the context of human disease, with a focus on pioneering novel therapeutic approaches. The successful candidate will play an active role in ongoing research within the Thomä lab, while also providing valuable support, guidance, and training to researchers across the School of Life Sciences in cryo-EM-related efforts.

This position will entail close collaboration with the cutting-edge facilities of the Dubochet Center for Imaging in Lausanne (DCI). Jointly funded by Unil, EPFL, UNIGE, and UNIBE, the DCI stands encompasses all facets of cryo-EM, with access to state-of-the-art cryo-electron microscopy equipment and expertise is readily available, fostering to collaboration to enable groundbreaking discoveries (https://www.dci-lausanne.org )


Main duties and responsibilities include :
  • Support users with negative stain and cryo-EM sample preparation.
  • Support users with sample loading and high-resolution cryo-EM data acquisition.
  • Train PhDs and postdocs in operating transmission electron microscopes.
  • Help users with single-particle data processing, analysis and model building.
  • Act as a driver to establish cryo-ET and in-situ cryo-EM at EPFL.

Your profile :
  • Ph.D. in structural biology with specific training in cryo-EM.
  • Experience with the operation of high-end TEMS, such as Krios and Glacios.
  • Experience with high resolution single-particle structure determination and modelbuilding.
  • Knowledge of cryo-ET and subtomogram averaging would be an advantage.
  • Hands-on experience with the operation of cryo-CLEM and cryo-FIB would similariy be a plus.
  • Good IT skills, being team player and a service-oriented attitude are essential.
