The aim of the EPFL Blue Brain Project (BBP), a Swiss brain research initiative founded and directed by Professor Henry Markram, is to establish simulation neuroscience as a complementary approach alongside experimental, theoretical and clinical neuroscience to understanding the brain, by building the world’s first biologically detailed digital reconstructions and simulations of the mouse brain.

Brain atlasing efforts have been conducted at the Blue Brain Project to build a 3D cell atlas of the whole mouse brain providing neuroscientists with a unique insight into the cellular composition of the mouse brain (number, major types and 3D positions of all neurons and glia in all areas of the mouse brain). Blue Brain’s Data and Knowledge Engineering team is building the next generation of Blue Brain’s 3D brain atlas application built off of BBP’s Knowledge Graph, enabling large-scale semantic and spatial data integration, exploration, inference and access to support detailed digital reconstructions and simulations of the mouse brain.
