EPFL, the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne, is one of the most dynamic university campuses in Europe and ranks among the top 20 universities worldwide. The EPFL employs more than 6,500 people supporting the three main missions of the institution: education, research and innovation. The EPFL campus offers an exceptional working environment at the heart of a community of more than 17,000 people, including over 12,500 students and 4,000 researchers from more than 120 different countries.

In the context of the project Parcels of Venice, SNSF-funded project, the Digital Humanities Lab at EPFL is looking for a research data engineer who will work with us on the implementation of large dataset and evaluation of large-scale extraction pipelines and data aggregation from documentary sources dataset as census document, cartography and photo archives.

About the Parcels of Venice project and Digital Humanities Laboratory:

Parcels of Venice is an SNSF-funded project now in its final year of development and implementation. The research has extracted a base of thousands of names from the census and cadastral sources of Venice between 1711-1840 and put them into a geoweb base. The purpose of the collaboration is to develop the suite of sites that are to perform the following functions : access the original documentary sources (in IIIIF), access the geographic base (Leaflet) by being able to search for faceted information- access the database of the population represented with certain statistical criteria.

The Digital Humanities Laboratory was founded by Professor Frédéric Kaplan in 2012. The lab develops new computational approaches to manage large digital cultural objects (such as large corpora of texts, images, and complex documents), and to execute high-resolution digitization of artifacts, buildings, and cities. It also aims to develop new understandings of digital cultures, such as visual languages, video culture, and linguistic mediations.
