Your position

We are looking for a scholar with excellent qualifications to represent Cultural Anthropology / Kulturanthropologie (in the tradition of Empirische Kulturwissenschaft ) in teaching and research in the appropriate breadth of the discipline. Successful candidates are able to demonstrate an innovative profile in research and teaching that encompasses the central and overarching research themes in the fields of popular culture and everyday culture.
Candidates are expected to demonstrate expertise in the specific methods of the discipline (e.g. ethnographic fieldwork, visual methods, biographical methods, discourse analysis, historical-archival methods). Possible research foci are visual anthropology, mobility/migration and place, cultural heritage, memory and narrativity. In order to contribute to a practice-oriented training in cultural anthropology, successful candidates engage in close cooperation with cultural, social and cultural-political institutions.
The professorship is responsible for teaching within the cultural anthropology program and the interdisciplinary Master in Changing Societies at the Department of Social Sciences. Willingness and commitment to interdisciplinary and transversal research cooperation within the Department of Social Sciences are expected, especially with Social Anthropology, Gender Studies and Urban Studies, as well as across faculties.


Your profile

Candidates should hold a Ph.D. and demonstrate substantive research experience beyond their doctoral studies. They must have an excellent record in research and publications, according to their academic age. In addition, experience in teaching and familiarity with digital tools for teaching and research is expected. A strong commitment to the supervision of doctoral students and to the acquisition of third-party funding is required, together with ability to work in a team and the willingness to participate in academic self-administration.
In addition to English, candidates are expected to regularly teach in German, or alternatively, demonstrate their commitment to learn German within two years of appointment.
